i think mist has two meanings, really. mist is a fog that rises from the ground or water when there's a large temperature difference between that and the air (i think when the air is colder?), and it is also a descriptive word for extremely light precipitation. i've always thought of fog as more like an extremely low cloud.

a little fog story. when the nova scotia was looking for a place to site the new airport (in the 60s?), they did a survey of the whole province to find the place with the least fog. they found a point to the north-east of halifax, and built the airport there. the fog promptly rolled in. they had chosen an area of relatively untouched wilderness, and naturally cut down all the trees. the trees were keeping the fog away. oops. as i write, flights at the airport are on hold until 1100 hrs, due to very heavy fog.

So when I make it to Nova Scotia to get photos of fog is there a train? Bus? Anything other than I plane to get there on?

Deb, it would be sooo cool if you could somehow get to the Euphrates. That is THE river. I think it would mean an automatic blue, but you'd have to title it "This is the Euphrates, chumps. BEAT THAT!"

Heh! It would be, but the darn thing is outside the wire and I can't get there. Besides, with luck I'll be in Kuwait sometime in the next 24 hours. Or so. All ye who travel commercial air, no complaining 'bout schedules, ya hear?

Oooo how cool would an aerial shot of the Euphrates be...

It's either the Tigris or the Euphrates, but not having a map on hand nor knowing where we were at the time, I couldn't tell you which. Edit to add it would be a lot prettier this time of year when the air is significantly clearer. That shot was taken in the heat of the summer.

Yep that'd do it Deb, what a great shot. Is there any chance you'll be flying over it again...have the camera handy just in case, yeah?

It's been raining for 2 days here. The 10 inches of snow has all melted. I have a beautiful river in my front yard!

Sadly, no. That was taken from a Blackhawk helicopter. My flight tonight will be at night (obviously) and probably a C-130, which does a wicked reverse death spiral to get to altitude and doesn't have windows. Hence nothing to shoot.

Oh bugger, they're not very accommodating to talented photogs requiring awesomely cool challenge entries are they. Well I'm sure you can edit some ditches into greatness.

That's right Deb, if you can take great pix of rocks and sand, I know you could make a drainage ditch look loverly!

Hipychik, we've also got the rain...ohh boy do we ever...and last night it took me 15 min to drive the 6km to the local library as I was doing 40km through fog...needless to say nobody else was stupid enough to be driving around...lotsa fun!!!!

Thanks, Rob, for the mention; when I went to bed last night (at 12:30 my time, in Germany where I was -- I'm home again now in England -- anyway, 7:30pm DPC time), it was just above 7 (7.0011, if I recall); pretty drastic for the scrubber to drag it down "so far," but I like the shot, particularly because my mom would have loved it. For some reason it makes me think of her (she never went to Germany, so it's not the location, it's just the shot).

My membership ends in 17 days. What a way to go out, huh?

By the way, my "fire" shot is at 5.1, so this was a "in the right spot at the right time" shot, not a change in my overall performance level.

Be well, all, travel safely, and enjoy.

Hey Bruce - renew your membership. I know people who know people who fly planes with weapons and stuff. (Shakin' in your boots yet?)

You can remove mist from your windshield with the mist setting on your wipers.

There's a mist setting on my wipers? Are you serious? I never heard of such a thing shouldn't someone have told me that important information for our annual hour of mist.

Otherwise known as "intermittent" ΓΆ€” you know, the setting where they swipe every few seconds only...

But what is the difference between mist and fog? The answer lies in their thickness ΓΆ€“ and how far we can see through them (ie: the visibility). If we can see less than 1 km through the cloud of water droplets, it is known as fog. If we can see between 1 and 2 km, we call it mist.

Key fact: although mist and fog look like smoke, they are actually tiny drops of water floating in the air. In fact, they are clouds that have formed at ground level.

ahem, a poem by your Fearless Leader:

Wiper Settings

allegro

Rain. A hard, insistent rain. A rain
poured from buckets. A rain carried
from the ocean by some monstrosity
of wind. A tidal wave. A flood.
The bottom of the sea. Gills
and fins, luminescence.

piano

Rain. Drizzle. Mist. Tinkle. Drip.
Chinese water torture. A humid
sun-bright summer afternoon. A desert
in bloom. A dusty wasteland. Rumors
of water, no, just a legend, no,
just a metaphor for
I don't know what.

Dew on the brambles, delicately worn
at sunrise, one clear drop on every thorn.
Let all my life of dust be cleansed in you,
clear, evanescent drop of dew...

Fragment from around 1965, just before I tuned 20...

A happy accident of phrase - to "tune" 20 - that's perfect...

I can't believe mist hasn't contributed at all to this conversation; wonderful words, Robert & Don, and lovely observation, Karen

I stand corrected, thanks.

The OED gives identical definitions for fog and mist (for the first paragraph anyway), but follows with "but to a lesser degree than fog" in the case of mist.

They do sort of go out of their way to keep them clear from enemy fire though :-) (NB, having obliged them to be there walking through the valley of the shadow of death in the first place).

We'll try to make do without the snaps for the sake of your safety, Deb. I'll even volunteer a little consolation (cack-handed) sketch for those who are really at a loss.

A symphony in 4 dimensions
over all the length of sea,
green salt grey from Norway
to France and across from
England to the Netherlands.

Hanging out of the grey
half dappled cloud vault
the shower curtain of rain.

And time,
for the movement that there is in it,
as it's always falling.
