While at the top end the scores were more or less normal - a winner above 7, top 15 above 6 - the middle of the pack was really skewed low. I knew I was running just under 5, so my score wasn't a surprise, but it was surprising to see I ended at 96th out of 293. A 5.0 and I just squeeked into the top third of the pack. The score at the 50% point was only 4.6, way lower than normal.

So, which came first, the chicken or the egg? Did lots of shots get trashed because all the anti-pet/kid/etc. threads "poisoned the well", or were the low scores and threads independant results of the perceived low quality of the submissions?

I can't answer your question because my photo (neither kid nor pet nor flower nor insect) received:

Average Vote per Commenters:5.200
Average Vote per Users w/ Cameras: 3.815
Place: 264

I think everyone's been in a bad mood lately and voting like it.

That's the only real conclusion I can come to as well. I really wanted my photo, which I was very proud of and which I thought was perfect for the challenge, to do well, above six. I was dissappointed when it didn't, but then I was shocked, and pleased in a way, to see how high it places in the voting order with such a low score. There's definetely a low voting trend happening. I think the winning photo was the only one above 7, yes? I don't think anyone will get an 8 ever again.

Hey that's nice! The ONLY thing that would help is if both kayakers had their paddles down. The one on the left could be drifting an that pose, but could be paddling too, and that probably hurt with cranky people looking for a reason to knock off a point or two.

I don't often say this, but you was robbed. :( Maybe not a ribbon contender, but should have been way farther up the pack. Looking at a couple of the comments, looks like you not only suffered from interpretation issues, but from recognition issues (someone thought it was ice - would make it hard to grasp).

yeah, that's what I was thinking. We were on our way paddling out to an island where we were going to camp out. It was an 8 mile paddle and I had them take a break and go in front of me so I could take some photos. The person paddling, my girlfriend, was just catching up to the other person already drifting. It was a nice rest for all of us and great light for some photos. I have a bunch of shots where nobody is paddling but they don't have the compositional elements that I liked in the shot I submitted. They were more snapshot photos where the people were looking at me and smiling, which is nice as a present to give to them, but not something I particularly find artistic. I really liked how the kayaks were coming together in the triangle in the one I submitted and the fact that they seemed to be drifting out there together and not posing for shot.

Thanks, I'm usually happy to get anywhere above 5! I was actually happy just to get a shallow DOF that I didn't realize how much most people want the foreground (or nearground anyway) in focus.

But since I was just running out in the street, holding the camera down at the ground and shooting one frame, and getting back to the sidewalk, I was happy to get something that good. If I get around to it, I'll try recropping it.

I STILL wish we could see the comments during the voting. As you say, a lot of people need more info, but don't want to read a paragraph for a title.

Scott and Paul - I liked both of yours. Very refreshing.

Jason - a well deserved 25th (but should have been higher).

I knew there'd be loads of relaxing critters and offspring so I wanted to do something unusual too - and I paid the price:
