I think he's got to be one of the finest American artists. I once had someone tell me he thought that one of my images was similar to his style. I was elated for a week. This is that image.....what do you think?

A few have mentioned that you'd like me to stick around......after that last spleen venting about some of my baggage, I would have no idea why, but if you don't mind if I seem to lose my mind every now and then.......well, it's great to be loved.
I'm seriously starting to wonder about some of you in the sanity level department. Either that or you're all a bunch of sickos that slow down for car wrecks and you just have some twisted curiosity about which direction I'll wander off into next. Or you're all just REALLY bored!
Thanks are definitely in order.....you guys are awfully forgiving.

My dad ended up spending a decent chunk of time this summer scanning old family photos (they're up to 80 years old, and all funky and old-fashioned, the way they all were at the time)... And I started slowly restoring some of them, I find it very relaxing - all that nice gentle cloning :)
Anyway, I'm quite pleased with the first results, just thought it'd be nice to share it with you guys :)

Well, it's hard to drive fast, hold the camera with a heavy telephoto lens (for the gory close-ups), and still use good photographic technique! |

Wow, how long did that take you? My Wife's father has a bunch of picture they would like me to digitize. For some reason they think since I take picture I am a photoshop whiz. The sad news is I don't even own the program. Is this something easy to do, or is it pretty advanced? Capture NX isn't the best for repairing photos. |

Awesome work, Jelena! And Jayson, either splurge and treat yourself to Photoshop or find it somewhere floating around... not that I encourage that kind of behavior. (I actually did buy a copy after using a trial for, umm, awhile.) |

That IS nice work. If it were mine, I might have left in the visa stamps, or whatever theya re, for authenticity's sake, but you did a heck of a job.

There's a mind in there? Damn. What's it like having one of those? Does it come with an instruction manual? How often do you need to upgrade?
Good to see you,Jeb. Happy new year. |

Sanity is highly overrated. Let me share...
Yesterday, I found... (are you ready?) ... a feather! Yes, an actual feather. From a bird. So I took this feather into my studio. Here's my studio:
[thumb]628772[/thumb]
You may recognize my studio - I shot my recent texture entry here and a couple of other odd shots, both here, and just to the left and around the corner:
If you go to the left and around the corner, then to the right, you'd get to the maintenance yard where I shoot a lot of shots of shovels and pick-axes. You've seen those.
Anyway, back to the feather!! Yes, a real feather! I shot it, edited it, added layers, blended, cropped, and did all sorts of stuff. I doubt it would win any challenges, though. It seems just a bit downtrodden, as far as feathers go.
Now where were we on this sanity thing again?

It took roughly an hour to restore the original pic, then another 20 mins or so of just normal photo editing.
And I wouldn't say the restoration bit is too skilled, it just takes patience more than anything. And what you tend to use the most is cloning, and also the healing or spot healing brush a bit (though you could do it all with just a cloning tool). And for the bits that are completely faded or covered with stuff, you use a very low opacity very soft brush to paint on what you think might've been there...
And I second Melethia's comment about Photoshop :) CS3 rocks. Every photographer should have a copy of Photoshop and a copy of Lightroom, they're just too much fun and too good to miss out on :)
(ok, and Neat Image. And Photomatix for the HDR inclined. And maybe Stitcher or what's it called for panoramas. Did I miss anything?) |

Thanks :)
Actually, that's a good idea... I didn't really think about the stamps, I just had this sort of simple "must erase bad random stuff" mission. Bit like a computer game, where the space invaders are replaced by random lines and splodges :) |

Great work on the restorations Jelena! Now all you need are some margarita-pouring lemurs and vintage fire-spinner shots to fix up and you're set for life! :-)
Oh yeah just clinging on to 5.0219 with COntrast... |

You might like Andrew Hetherington's new book then, 'A Room With a View'

I'd say coming home safely would be at the top of the list. :)
On a side note, anyone doing a Time Lapse shot of Clowns wearing Spectacles?

Yeah, I could go for that getting home in one piece deal. Our morning mortar guy has really outdone himself today. I think he's making up for missing a morning or two. Normally it's two, sometimes four. Today I got to fourteen and quit counting. (There's another one. Hopefully it's tea time soon.) It really annoys me when I'm in the shower, too. Worse is the porta-pottie though. Speaking of porta-potties, the two best pieces of graffiti I've seen so far are "Help! I'm a lesbian in a man's body!" and "I fear the blue splash."
As for scores, the Isolation by Contrast is doing very well, given I wasn't sure what the challenge was looking for; the Free Study not so much, but I do have very helpful comments as to why (no interest, don't see the point, good technicals.) Basically it's one of those shots that only I like, which is cool.

Every once in awhile, my faith in humanity is restored. At the chow hall for lunch we had (in addition to food) a four piece woodwind ensemble. Saxophones - soprano, alto and tenor. They played a little of everything. It was positively delightful. And suprise of all surprises, the audience, composed mostly of quite youngish men, applauded most loudly on the time-tested classical pieces - the canons and the fugues. Ain't that something? :-) |
