I think there should be some serious reconsideration of forum rule 7, which states:

"When posting potentially adult content, include a warning. When possible, include the warning in your subject line. If you are posting in an existing thread, consider carefully whether the content is appropriate for the thread. If it is, include a warning at the beginning of your post. Unless your warning is in the subject line, any images must be linked rather than thumbnailed or posted directly."

This rule catches (in my view unintentionally) those forum posts that are for the serious, legitimate, mature discussion of photographs posted on this site in both challenges and portfolios.

Whereas I understand the need to control links to outside material, I think it inappropriate to require a warning of any kind when discussing via thumbnails those photographs posted on this site that have nudity. Those that do not wish to view such photographs already have the option to turn those thumbnails off. This makes the inclusion of photos already at the site within this rule redundant.

Another side effect is to make the adult population here feel childish when our posts are edited to conform to this rule. Such edits break apart the continuity of legitimate thread discussions about our valued photos. After all, we are adults, despite all appearances ;-) and enforcing the rule in this way, specifically in view of the fact that other safeguards for people not wishing to view such on-site material are in place, in my view leaves a bad impression about the controlling forces at the site, again unintentionally.

My suggestion is to change the wording of the rule to something like this:

"When posting potentially adult content at third party websites, include a warning. When possible, include the warning in your subject line. If you are posting in an existing thread, consider carefully whether the external content is appropriate for the thread. If it is, include a warning at the beginning of your post. Unless your warning is in the subject line, any external images must be linked rather than thumbnailed or posted directly."

I truly believe the spirit of this rule is understandable but misguided. Let us show and discuss our work as the responsible and mature adults that we are, while still allowing those that wish to access to the tools to turn off material they don't want to see in the forums.

It is a help to those accessing DPC from work - they can know what is safe to view without getting in trouble with the office security folks.

On the other hand, there are minors that like to learn about photography from this site. I for one would prefer that the warning continued. Do a few extra words in a subject line hurt a poster? No way.

You can still turn off local nudes via the preferences page (or don't view the site at work). The rule should still cover off-site adult material and the required modifications to the title and post containing off-site adult material.

Minors should be monitored by their parents, and are required to have a parent sign a waiver to participate here. If parents don't want their kids viewing nudes, they can still turn off nude thumbnails. Title warnings for off-site material should continue.
