Deb, I had a idea when you posted your question the other day, unfortunately a unpleasant situation came up that demanded my attention. What about photos of helmet art, I believe in wars past there where solders that would embellish their headgear with sayings and art. I think if it does happen there it might be a interesting photo essay. |

Lea, keep strong for your kids. I'm really sorry about your mom. Those are some hard decisions. |

I haven't really noticed a lot of that. These days they adorn their helmets with all sorts of high-tech gear. But mostly they're just your standard Kevlar helmet, with their name on a small band and sometimes their blood type. Most of the troops I see are wearing their normal headgear, though, since I'm on a major camp, not out in the field. Good idea, though! |

But even that (adorning with high-tech gear and name only) tells a story; if they aren't all the same (if there is different high-tech gear, or different arrangements of it), it definitely is a story worth telling. It could be interesting to juxtapose the current configurations with those from Korea or Vietnam, too. Thanks for your kind comment about my haiku, too, Deb, much appreciated, as always.
Thanks also to Robert, Don and Peter for their poetry site suggestions. Robert's and Peter's suggestions both seem to want people who are more seasoned than I am, though I'll continue to lurk on both for a bit to see if I might fit in there, as well as on Don's, which seems a bit more accepting of newbies like myself.
Happy New Year, all!!
Best,
Bruce

Sorry, just one more piece of advice you've heard a million times before. Keep an eye on what you have rather than what you don't have. That burden of resentment will lift, life will become manageable, and you will find peace and joy.
You have so much to be thankful for: your beautiful girls, your home, your hobby and friends here, the Internet, food, schools (with cheerleaders), running water, electricity, clothing and warmth. We all have so many things that would be luxuries in other parts of the world. We are each, to some degree, a self-centered Paris Hilton, living a privileged life.
Yikes, I've come full circle. Is it any wonder we are despised by many people around the world?

I don't think there's anything wrong with having a home, a school, internet, food, warmth, running water and electricity. Those things are common most places these days. It's wanting the huge home in the gated community, the private prep school with the highest ratings, the exotic food on an every day basis, preferably delivered and prepared by a staff... you get my drift. Then focusing on the woes that accompany that heady lifestyle - gods forbid the common police give you a ticket for driving under the influence! I shan't continue... it's annoying at best.
Suffice it to say we could all get by on much less than what we have. Do we need to? No. But we could. |

Fast one to show you my gift to our youngest son.
His favorite brew is Blue Moon and he requested a stained glass piece that matched the advertising. I had it all designed when I took my infamous slip and fall. Finished it just in time for his Christmas gift this year.
Oh and the 21st of December we were approaching our hotel in Alexandria and we went right by the Iwo Jima Memorial all beautifully lit for the evening. Interesting feeling witnessing it again. NO! I didn't venture out for pics.

I meant to point out earlier that it my just be me, but I see a world of difference between "hate" and "despise". I agree 100% that to "hate" is an entirely negative thing, but to me "despise" connotes extreme dislike, not extreme emotion.

I think Paris isn't worth the length of time it takes the shutter to click her portrait. But I do worry about our culture that so many people care so deeply about what happens to the very rich and the very famous. I just don't care who Brad kisses or whether Tom Cruise is crazy. I enjoy movies, but the people who work on them aren't relevant to my life.
Deb, I agree with redneck's point about variety in soldiers' gear. I always find it interesting that the general impression is of a large number of interchangeable soldiers, yet images I've seen show lots of variety. Everyone may be given the same gear, but personal preferences still show up.

Here's some irony. This article contrasts an image of a naked girl running from her bombed village in Vietnam with one of Paris Hilton crying as she's carted off to jail. In the article, the author wonders whether today's US newspapers would be willing to publish a picture of a naked girl, even one with such hardhitting, obvious newsworthiness.
Apparently, the answer is no,at least not at the top. Here's the banner over the article. I can't think of any reason to include the inserts except to cover up the girl.

Now the curious thing is they do publish the uncensored article on the followup page and online. I wonder why there are different standards for the lead banner vs. elsewhere. Maybe it's the difference between the front page, which is where it appeared originally as news, and the Style section, which is more about "lifestyle" stuff and personal interest stories.

A final update.
I got to the hospital about 11:30 or so, and had an hour or so with mom, my step-dad and my uncles before mom passed.

There you go, Jeb:
A Day̢۪s Work for a Day̢۪s Money
Spare me the children of the newly rich,
a foot-and-a-half of each limb in the grave
their fathers robbed of erstwhile value which
gives them the wealth that won't reciprocally save
a hide or hair of them. So here I stand
with collar turned to rain and piteous wailing.
My cloth cap won't come down into my hand,
that's not what it was made for. Failing
to be the thing it is would then compound
the travesty of honest toil that brings
about this web wound world; confounds
the arts of growing or of making things.
I wish I didn't have to suffer fools
and I were back in health and on the tools.

Lea, close your eyes and reach within, past the tears, deeper than the sorrow, she is there. Bright eyes, a smile, and calming touch. Your mom̢۪s body might have failed , but her soul resides inside of you, and will forever. |

Lea, I'm glad your mother's suffering has ended. I'm sorry yours has begun. It is so hard to lose a mother. One's life is turned upside down. A moment ago you had port in the storm, now you must become that port for the rest of the family. You are a wonderful mom, and will do well in your new role. |
