I got a Free Study dilemma too. Anyone?

Stephen Fry has a slightly different attitude, maybe. In his book The Ode Less Travelled he actually sets out a twelve part plan (a plan, anyway) for the reader to get the poetry habit, as it were. Not a lot of use to me, in so far as I was thoroughly addicted long before I discovered sex or drugs or rock and roll, or even photography. I did manage to discover all those thing before I found out about things like sestets and enjambments.

It must be a matter of taste, which book or school you prefer. Also, as you bestride the US/UK divide of common language, you may know that 'formalism' is pretty much a West-of-pond term.

The Gazebo is one of the more established on line forums - presumably a matter of taste as well - but it has longevity...

//criticalpoet.com strikes me as the DPC of poetry forums. A few inspired people, a bunch of people who think they know the "rules" of poetry, and so on. Rob, we should talk!

Happy holidays, suckers!

and dang, I better update my links if people be linking to it!

Jeb, I received your photos, but looks like tomorrow before I can even open them. Paulina marched in the Fiesta Bowl parade this morning and is performing in Glendale Glitters tonight. A moms work is never done.

If someone else could help Jeb out, I would be grateful.

Fixed your thumb

I thought this must by NikonJeb's cat. Everyone else in his house seems to be doing this.

here's a poem about the Stupid Gifts theme. I warn you, this could become a new feature. The other suck poets might even join in!

This is a stupid gift.
It doesn't tell my own story.
The color clashes with the walls.
Moonlight sticks in the gears.
I opened a window and the last bird escaped.
The batteries are made of tar.
I can hear it walking on the roof at night.
I suppose it's trying to be rain.
We had a long talk
and ended up on the porch
crushing the paper swans
we had inadvertently folded.
It never laughed.
Returning it created a pressure
of taut skin around my forehead and chest.
It's still throwing patterns on the bedroom wall,
the last thing I see.

Today's update is not god.

I'm going tomorrow to see my mom.

Mom's back on the ventilator again, her breathing had gotten very bad, and even on 100% Oxygen, her sat levels are not very good.

She has contracted something that My step-dad called "Respiratory Distress Syndrome". Apparently this is something really bad, which even with a healthy patient, doesn't have a particularly good prognosis.

Well, Mom is going into this distress thing with compromised lung function to begin with - from decades of smoking, from tumors due to cancer. Also one of her lungs has partially collapsed.

Step-dad and Mom have talked - she has expressed her desire to not be kept alive mechanically. So, basically if the measures that are being taken to combat this don't help within the next few days, he is expecting to have to pull the plug and go with purely comfort measures.

This is hard, while I fully and completely understand and agree with her desire not to be kept alive artificially, I'm having a really difficult time with the concept that this could be goodbye.

A difficult decision for everyone, to be sure. Wishing you and your family much strength during this time, Lea.

I can't express my thoughts any better than what Karen said. Me, too!

Lea, even though I'm halfway across the planet from you, consider yourself hugged.

After saying recently that I don't find haiku satisfying, for some reason today I did. For you, Lea:

Against winter, trees
Bend with an understanding
Inevitable

My thoughts, and those of my family, are with you and yours.

In an interesting but completely pointless aside (and the interesting part is subjective), I own my camera page. You will note that I've populated it with a very nice range of scores. :-) At least two more will show up in the next few weeks, too.

Great article - thanks for the link. And can you imagine how that Hilton photograph would have scored at DPC?

Being over here, though not near the "real war" by any means (other than the things that go boom), I can say the general population of the US does indeed appear very, very foolish, self-absorbed, and utterly clueless.

I donât think it is a requirement to be âover thereâ to make that observation. LOL

BTW Deb howâs the weather in your desert, over here in the Mojave itâs getting darned right chilly.

We're in the mid 30s at night and the upper 50s, low 60s during the day. Pretty standard "winter in the desert" kinda weather. Cloudy today, even! That's not common, but does occur more frequently than in the summer, when there are no clouds at all.

Powerful article......

I cannot strongly enough put into words how much I despsie Paris Hilton.

This is real, though.....

"Hilton's pain was fodder for the national pastime of schadenfreude -- an ugly use for celebrity that often borders on sadism -- but at the same time, her pain could have disappeared in an instant, if she were capable of a single philosophical thought."

Jeb, hatred is a debilitating disease. Let it go and move on. Paris Hilton is not worth a drop of ants piss, and no one should endanger their health on her account.
