Does anyone else know of any other good photo challenge sites like this one?
...besides jpgmag |

Sadly no. They all seem to have problems with exposure, lack of focus and too much noise. Wait, maybe there is some simularities with this one. ;)
I think forums have been going through a down cycle the last couple of years. But there is always hope the trend will turn around.
There are a lot of forums out there. Just Google Photo Message Forum or some wording like that and you will see a number of them come up.

Apparently this one has a following.
Fujimugs has challenges for Fuji Only and Open....their challenges are less frequent than here. |

I never like any of the other ones I see. There's just something about the way DPC is set up. It seems more organized, less confusing and all around better. |

There are some decent photography forums at Flickr. And loads of images to look at. Does take a bit of work on your part to find the good images though.
Might have to say I'm kinda ticked at Flickr's customer service (or lack thereof) at the moment, but overall it's a decent site with lots of different interest groups.

...but DPC is not perfect. I wish this site had:
o Richtext editor
o Integrated PMs
o Method to mark forum(s) as read
o Personalized avatars
o Integrated emoticons
o Mechanism to delete an inadvertent vote
o Option to turn on automatic watching of thread upon posting or replying
o Better navigation through a collection of images (both portfolio and challenge results)
Basically, if it had more vBulletin-style features, this would be a huge improvement.

Oddly enough, one of the reasons I like dpc better than others is that the fourms don't have a lot of the same "features" as some of the others.
Of your exact list, though, can you be a bit more specific on "method to mark forums as read." I know it is not perfect, but this thread will turn colors (gray from blue) after I've read it. Would you like something a bit more indepth/controllable than that?

For example, if I'm browsing through the Photography forum (this page), it would be nice to have a button/link that says, "Mark forum read". That way, when I come back to it, all (if not most) of the items would be dimmed.
I thought of something else. On this page, it would be nice to have that same button/link which resets all as read.
By the way, that page takes forever to load. I know it's doing a lot behind the scenes, but maybe a refactoring is in order to tune its performance.

Sometimes when I'm on DPC for a while, moving through pages, I'll come back to the homepage and find that ALL, or most, of the threads are gray, even if I haven't read them. Then they stay that way for a while, which can make it harder to keep track of what I have and haven't seen. Some sort of user-defined checkbox might eliminate this problem, and make it easier.

o Richtext editor Yep, that would be very cool.
o Integrated PMs Yep, that too... and it will very likely happen, not sure when
o Method to mark forum(s) as read Not sure what additional function you desire here, but by default the folder color indicates this
o Personalized avatars Download the DPC Mod by Jeff Ward :-)
o Integrated emoticons Personally I don't see the beauty, but that's just me :-)
o Mechanism to delete an inadvertent vote Not sure what the value of this would be, as opposed to just changing it to something that fits yoiur view of the image
o Option to turn on automatic watching of thread upon posting or replying An interesting idea...
o Better navigation through a collection of images (both portfolio and challenge results) Definitely a top item on the "feature wanted" list.

I frequent a couple sites that run on vBulletin, and honestly I think our forums are *much* easier to navigate and more flexible. There are a few really big improvements that could be made, like your suggestion of compatibility with rich text, but I'd really hate to see us vBulletinized. |

DPC is very unique but there other Photo gallery sites I visit which have challenges on the side,
www.Photosig.com Assignments (see link at the top of their page)
www.fredmiranda.com/forum - Weekly and Monthly Assignments
www.PBase.net - Specific galleries for challenges posted
www.worth1000.com
www.betterphoto.com/contest.asp
www.Photo.net
www.deviantart.com
www.Flickr.net
The other community based sites listed also have weekly challenges/assignments groups or photo egghunts.
There are many good German and Russian sites out there as well.

I'm not saying vBulleting is the cat's meow. I'm saying that many other sites use it and folks feel comfortable when going from one vBulletin site to another. Consistency is a good thing. :-)

I've moderated a vBulletin photo site since 2001 and own and run another forum with my own licensed version of it, and it's about the best forum software out there... and I've been on a lot over many years. DPC is ok, but there are too many features that are missing on DPC to make it a good message type forum. It's fine for the challenges, but it's just to bland to make a good message forum. I know some people like bland, so there is nothing wrong with it, but to me, vBulletin has a lot over this forum software.
This is just my opinion based on what I like seeing in a message type forum.

Let's forego any forum upgrades and get the f-ing resolution upsized. |

If you're looking for pure artistic sites altPhotos.com is great. The forums suck and there are no contests but there are a ton of professional photographers who upload to the site. It's all artistic. You won't see vacation pics or snapshots. |

//www.onexposure.net Photos are screened and approved before they get onto the site. However more emphasis is put on artistic endeavors rather than technical skill. Although you will find highly technical photos there as well. Check it out! |

Here's another site, it's the gallery area of the Microsoft Pro Photo site. If you open up the featured gallery, you'll see our own silverfoxx's winning entry (Inachevé) in there.
