How come every christmas the merchandisers are hollering from the rooftops?:
give her a jaguar
give her a lexus
give her a mercedes
get hers at jareds

And we get:
give him an electric shaver

LOL LOL

12/13/2007 04:18:42 PM · #2
Well...its based on the presumption that if she gets those things, and you shave real close, then you'll get the "present" you really want.

Thus the reason to get a good woman first, one who doesn't need those things, one who is a goood buddy, then you get your world rocked - just because its tuesday, or 4:00, or its cloudy/sunny/daytime/nightime...

;-)

Wish me luck finding that trait here. "we're material girls" & "what have u done for me lately" is the order of the day where i live ;)

sorry all the gals you've met are like that, dmadden. But I gotta agree with Judi. I don't want a jag or a lexus, or an electric shaver. I do want a massage and new winter boots though! ;)

Nope judes, i never once said their all the same. But I can honestly say that a high percentage of women here subscribe to that. Just a fact of life and to get back to my original post, the merchandisers certainly fuel this behaviour.

And before we break out the pitch forks on poor david, please be advised that i'm in no way trying to start a gender bashing forum (but Judi can bash me anytime :) I'm Just concerned about the bad influence of marketing agencies these days. Just look at that big "get a divorce" advert that came out the other day.

Oddly, I was thinking the same thing about the spat of commercials I am seeing. Does marketing reflect life or does marketing create / influence our way of life? I think it's much like Hollywood - they create a reality that might reflect the one the creators live in, but has little to do with the general population and the way we live.

Tuesday?? You get rocked on a weekday??? *runs off to have a chat with his wife*

Now if I was a risk taker, I would have added to this post: "Frisca, I bought you a pair of winter boots with a built in massage feature. I'll bring them over on Tuesday." ...but that could get me into trouble. :P

When you say "here", do you mean Jamaica? Is it a social mentality thing? I'm thinking maybe you will have more luck if you hang with different women - those who rock things on weekdays and have no expensive desires. ;o)

Actually that was a challenging itch i so wanted to scratch, but i was concerned about the consequences of flirting with site council ;)
I'm off to read the challenge rules again.

Actually I was trying not to be derogatory about it, I actually like giving massages as it helps with my arthritis and hyper-mobility to keep my hands loose and actually helps reduce the pain in my joints ;)

Its just that offering a body massage to a beautiful woman in public can be taken the wrong way some how ;)

Does anyone really give a car for christmas?

I usually buy my own present, like the guy in the cadillac commercial
//www.cadillac.com/cadillacjsp/footer/downloads.jsp (JEALOUS, first one second row)

This year I'm getting myself a Wii game (the kids are getting the Wii) and a set of golf clubs. Since my hobby, photography, has turned into my profession, I need a new hobby and perhaps golf will teach me patience...if not, at least it'll get me away from work and the kids for a few hours.

Hopefully you've tried the game out, with rental clubs, lessons, driving range etc, before making this decision? Decent golf clubs are expensive, and there's a whole LOT of them languishing in the closets of the world...

I think I've mostly managed to kick my golf habit. Climbed back down from a 3 round a day, 11 handicap obsession.

Least photography is cheaper.

Define decent? Lots of people take nice picture with $150 P&S cameras. I don't intend on being a pro golfer, or even a low handicap player so I'll never use the slight improvement the best gear might offer.

Decent clubs can be had for $200. Graphite shafts, hybrid irons, bag, head covers, etc.
i got these //www.shoplocal.com/lid-2092315262prid-99270_-acuity-all.fp for the $179. My wife spends $40/month on a gym membership and hasn't gone to the gym in 5 months.

My goal is to do better than Par times two. Yeah, I expect to be that bad. My dream for '08 would be to get par at least once a round on some hole on some course.

Besides, new camera gear just isn't as fun as it used to be. The first week of Jan i'll be getting a 50 1.2, 100 2.8 and 135 F2. Two L lenses and my first macro. I should be all excited and what not, right? They're tools, like a new hammer or workboots. Like the new Pitney Bowes postal meter thing that's coming - not all that exciting. But then I don't really like this time of the year. I'm sure I'll perk up by the time the lenses get here.

If you don't have patience, golf will not give it to you.

There's a reason golf is referred to as "A good walk ruined".

Around here they like to call it "Wack F***" ;) that also can sum it up pretty good.

Yeah, ballpark of $200 is about minimum for decent clubs; for me that's a fair chunk of change. As for "using" the "slight improvement" the "best" gear has to offer, well in some ways you have that backwards. Why? Because it depends on how you define "best gear".

If the "best gear" is high-end clubs that the pros use, you are pretty much correct. In fact, that kind of gear will make your game worse, not better; those clubs have zero margin for error ΓΆ€” if you don't have a repeatable swing that gets the sweet spot to the ball on line and on plane every time, you're in trouble with these clubs.

If you define "best gear" as "the gear best suited to my game at this stage of its evolution", then you're not correct. One of the best routes to improving yo9ur game is to get a knowledgeable clubfitter to outfit you with gear that minimizes the effects of your flaws and maximizes the effects of whatever you do right. These are called, loosely, "game improvement clubs", and there's a whole world of them out there.

So, in a sense, your p&s analogy holds up well here; if you start with a piece of crap camera, you'll take technically inferior images and may get discouraged. If you start with pro gear and you're a rank beginner, you'll be over your head, take crap pictures, get discouraged, and have wasted a lot of money. Start with a decent p&s and move up as you improve and feel the need, that's the ticket :-)

So it is with clubs. You'll define your own goals as you go, and spend what you have to spend to attain them :-)

That's not entirely true, though it's true up to a point. If you are incapable of patience, golf sure won't give it to you; that's a fact. But, contrariwise, golf is a very good avenue for teaching yourself how to roll with the punches, shrug off your mistakes, keep an eye on the big picture, and find great satisfaction in incremental improvements.

It's arguably one of the most useful exercises there is for that sort of stuff :-)
