Looking like I might have a long weekend in Vegas in early January. Assuming you'd been to Vegas before and were looking to get away from the city for a bit - where would you go ? I've spent a couple of weeks in Death Valley and flown around in the Grand Canyon, but have never been to Zion, Valley of Fire or any of the other parks to the East of Vegas.

So - 3 days - where would you go, what would you do ?

Valley of Fire- about 45minutes away, interesting rock formations, a Petroglyph, some petrified wood.
Snow Canyon State park-2 hours away, Interesting rock formations, 2 breading pair of Bald Eagles.
Zion NP- 3 hours away, Ok out of the car, but you have to take a bit of a hike to truly enjoy it as with any of the above.
I live in St. George , I have been to most of this area you are talking about, what do you want to do..

Bryce Canyon NP is one of my favorites, just about 3 hours away

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is located just a few miles west of Las Vegas-very interesting place.

Closer to 4+ hours depending on weather you might not be able to get up there, But I agree its fantastic and you might just run across a big bull Elk on the way.

That's why I'm going, then I'm leaving for the weekend to do something more interesting. I like hiking. Last time in Yosemite my wife and I did about 10 miles a day for a week. Zion seems like a good option - bit lower than Bryce, less likely to have so much weather.

The visit to Hoover Dam is a must. Also there is a Turquoise mining camp within about a three hour drive. You can keep all you find and you have good chance of finding some great pieces......more luck there than in the casinos.

Hoover Dam was one of the places I wanted to go to when I was in Las Vegas but ran out of time.
