Hey Yall

I am new to photo sites. I have been a member here for some time now but, unlike in the real world, I tend to be intimidated when I join a site. There are millions of great sites with billions of great people. But, there are a few awful, mean sites with bunches of ill-willed and mean people.

I wanted to let everyone know that this is a great site, with far above average entries. I will not even say where I am now because if you cant say good things then leave it off your tongue. I will only share what occurs. There, people arent 'for the team'. Example, they will give your image that deserves a 5-8 a 2 so that their image places better.

In my eyes, thats so foul. The entire environment is foul. The forums are foul. Complaining, fighting, 'low balling' each other in ratings. You can feel the karma when you log in there, I dont belong there anymore.

All of the 'greats' have already left. So now I have no good work to look at to make all the rest worth it. Because DP is a good site with many features, I dont know where to start.

So, I figured I'd start in the only way I know how, reach out and she what response I get... if any. Im asking for someone to take my hand and just let me know how to get started. Major NO NO's. Just like getting a new job really.

Im jumping ship from my old site and looking for a home. After much consideration I decided (because of the level of work I see here) that this would be the best place for me. Im here to learn and help. I cant learn from watching dog noses pressed against a screen door while Aunt Edna tries to find her keys in her purse with a smoke hanging out of her mouth.

Thats what my old site has fallen down to. Those shots get 'Great shot, 10R!). I need to spend the time I have online learning, not searching for something to learn from. Digging through literally billions of 'snapshots'.

Feel my pain? C'mon! Someone help me get off the ground? Please? Thank you! Very nice to meet you all and I hope to make many wonderful friends here!

in order to start learning (and us suggesting on where you have room for improvement) you need to post some of your work. also the best way to learn about comp/focus/editing flaws in your own work is to critique others work. When someone told me that i thought they were full of crap and just trying to squeeze a comment outta me but its so true. My work really started improving ten fold when i really began looking at others works and leaving my opinion on it.

If you tell us a bit about what it is your looking for (besides a great community) be it comp/focus/editing Im sure theres a few people that will be able to point you in the right direction via links to sites that have the info your looking for. Theres also a great tutorial section here that has also helped me alot (and continues to do so).

If you post some of your work (or let us know where to look at some)I would love to give you my opinions on a few of them at least. have a great day

Welcome to DPC, Skyfox.

Registered users are welcome to share their work in the forums and enter the Open challenges. Membership here comes with portfolio space, and that's what Cher meant by uploading.

To post an image in the forums that is hosted off-site for forum sharing, this tutorial will help.

I have to agree with Smilebig. I sometimes feel that I should not be critiquing others work, because it is equal to or better than what I produce, however it is truly the strongest learning tool here. If you can identify why you do not like someone else's photo, it helps you with your own.

Another benefit is that commenting helps build that sense of community that you clearly want. People here like the feedback, even if it is to respectfully tell them what is wrong with their shot. I regularly get messaged by others thanking me for feedback.

I am probably not familiar with the competition site you came from. I have entered a couple on Worth1000, but they are really oriented more toward photoshopping than photography, and I find their point system screwy. (Though it probably ends up being cheaper than DPC) I also participate on Flickr, and I enjoy it a lot. That being said, I have seen a lot of so-so images over there being given "awards" that say things like "This is brilliant!" I don't participate in the invites/awards over there because it seems like false praise, and many of the invite/award groups seem to me to operate like pyramid plans. I'll post some stuff over there that I would not put on DPC. Still a lot of fun over there, and I get a lot out of both it and DPC.

Welcome aboard.

Right, just because I can't yet produce a 7+ photo myself (due to time, location, equipment constraints or whatever other excuses I have) doesn't mean I don't know what elements make an excellent photo worthy of a 7+.
