Those of you with the Oly cameras - what are you using to convert RAW files? I have some plugin with my Photoshop 7.0 but it's kind of cumbersome. I don't like the Olympus studio but will re-install that if I have to (and I cannot remember even if RAW conversion was in that). Right now I have to go thru file by file from my camera. I'd rather be able to download all the files and then go thru one by one later. Any hints, suggestions, download ideas?

I use RAWShooter Essentials. Works for me!

Adobe Bridge for CS2/CS3 probably works, but costs more.
I've been using Lightroom more lately, for post-processing 400-700 photos taken by someone on a vacation trip to South Africa.

I like Lightroom's abiility to Copy/Paste most settings/adjustments from one shot to any number of other shots. So you can do some fast basic pre-processing on a large number of files, faster.

All settings that you set on one Raw or .JPG file can easily be copied to ones with similar lighting scenes. It has 3 more adjustment slide bars that Adobe Photoshop does not.

Download Adobe's DNG converter, and then convert the ORF files to DNG. It is a lossless process, and you can even embed the original file in the DNG although I wouldn't reccommend it because the subsequent files are huge. Years form now you'll be able to open DNG files, but you never know with ORF files.

I really liked using CS for my RAW files but I have the first version and it won't open the E500 RAWs so I use Bibble and sometimes I still use the Oly software but I don't really like it much...I wish I could upgrade my CS version.

hyperfocal...I might have to try that.

So far I've tried the RAWShooter and am not a big fan of it. Maybe it's my computer but with waiting for all the previews each time I want to look at a photo - it just takes way too long. I do have some kind of ADOBE plug in but I will go look for that DNG converter now. Thanks for all the info here. I appreciate it because I never knew some of this stuff even existed.

Edit to say: nevermind about the DNG converter - nothing works for photoshop 7...

Lots of Olympus users rave about SilkyPix. It's not the fastest converter but produces good results with .orf files. You can try it free here: SilkyPix Downlaod

well the wait time is going to come in all programs, if you dont have atleast 1 gig of ram on your machine you might want to invest a cupple bucks to bring it up to speed

(user preference required - set file Association to ORF only is a good start) FastStone is the best viewer for ORF - no conversion necessary FastStone Image Viewer (free) will provide instant thumb & with a click you can see a full size preview of ORF files or any other kind of RAW file.
FastStone will also convert ORF (but a bit awkward, it is easier with another click or two, and export to photoshop, Lightroom, bibble or the converter of your choice.
