I know we recently had a self portrait challenge which yielded quite a few really cool photos, but how about a more open portrait challenge where the portrait could be of anyone but the photographer. |

I think that would be good. Just a portrait of another person as a challenge, it could be titled "Anybody but me" lol

I like the idea. I think that many of the most interesting shots in almost any challenge is a portrait (and maybe we will get rid of flowers/bugs/pets shots....) |

There's nothing more interesting than a face.
Excellent plan! |

I´d like to see that challenge with an extra rule .....
no croping allowed.

Is that supposed to be no cropping or no groping allowed? |

While I occasionally agree with the idea of discouraging pulling 10% out of an image and claiming its the whole thing, but what is the magical significance of a 3:2 ratio ? Why shouldn't an image that suits a square format be shown as a square ?

Especially when almost all our cameras shoot in 4:3 ratio!

I'm personally more drawn to 5:4 these days - using it a lot more. Think that could just be Scottish thriftiness not letting me waste paper on an 8x10....
[yes I know - more ink....]
The point being, although somewhat lost, that I don't know that I see the magic in keeping the original crop. Maybe as an educational exercise to encourage the frame to be filled and in general shooting for the longest side of the final format - but the particular ratio doesn't hold a whole lot of significance for me.

A pet photo can be a portrait too =o) As for flowers well a portrait of a little girl could have her holding a rose =o) |

My brother took this years ago: Cynthia and Rose
Gordon: I crop a lot into all kinds of funny ratios! That's one reason I got in the habit of making Bordered Pictures when I started ordering digital prints on standard sizes of photo paper -- and I could often avoid any resampling at all. And the Scots don't have a monopoly on thriftiness -- I didn't want to waste the inch or so at the bottom of this photo* so I printed some "stamps" of my photos.
*Can't find it online right now -- I'll post it when I get home from work.
