I rather thought that one of our freedoms included not having to pledge allegiance ... what are you suggesting?

To say nothing of little things like being able to speak your mind, including using symbols in whatever way you see fit.

We're not losing our freedoms because people don't pledge allegiance to a bit of cloth. I always thought it strange we did that - how about pledging allegiance to a real thing, not a symbol. Like, say, the Constitution. That's what I did in the oath I took - to defend it against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Speaking of domestic enemies of the Constitution, we are losing our freedoms because people treat as treasonous anyone who questions the government.

I'm no anarchist; I believe in a strong government. But I also believe that it's a fundamentally American thing to challenge the government, to hold it accountable. Not that it's only an American thing, but as an American, one of your sacred duties is to hold the gov't responsible for what it does and how it behaves.

And I'd vote to toss anyone who went after a flag-flier before the guy with the knife.

Disclaimer: I know zilch about the specifics of that video other than what's shown. Maybe the flag owner had been told by the police what the law was and deliberately ignored legal warnings. In which case, sure, give him a fine.

It's my opinion that the bar owner was seeking attention by blatantly breaking the law. He got it. Probably more attention than he would have gotten if Jim hadn't shown up.

I'm not gonna say Jim's actions were right, but I won't question his loyalty to the US.

In the end, the owner and Jim were both doing pretty much doing the same thing - displaying national pride, although Jim hasn't abandoned his country.

I applaud the gentleman. His action is indicative of the frustration felt by many in Americans that our country is slowly going to hell in a handbasket. My first thought after seeing the video was "Good for him".

The issue is not necessarily the flag itself but the blatant disrespect for our country that the act of flying of Mexican flag above the American flag displays. 12+ million illegal aliens are in our country and the government and those sworn to uphold our immigration laws seem to be disinterested in doing anything serious about the problem. Primarily Mexican legal and illegal immigrants marched by the hundreds of thousands during 2006 during their "A Day Without an Immigrant" day illustrating how deficient the enforcement of our border and immigration laws are. Portions of our cities are being transformed into Little Mexico's, hospitals are being closed due to their inability to cope with the strain of the illegal populations that use them, etc.

In an interview the man stated that the authorities had been alerted to the flag situation several times prior to his action. Nothing was done by the authorities. It is not hard for me to understand how someone who sees all that is transpiring and who loves his country could take this stand and essentially say "No more"....especially a veteran. Was he legally on solid footing by taking this action, no. But I'm glad he did it.

and herein lies the problem:)
