OK, this might be the silliest question, but what does bump mean? I've seen it so many times in the different threads, but I have yet to understand why people do it...
Can someone enlighten me?

It is just a way to 'bump' the thread up to the top of the page. To get more replies and to keep the thread active longer. |

It's an effort to bring back to life an uninteresting thread ... 99% of the time.

it is barrier that you need to pass or go over in order to proceed and move forward.

It's an unwillingness to acknowledge the harsh reality that nobody else cares about the content of the thread.
Usually followed up by one or two other comments that really ram home the fact that nobody else cares.
The second bump is the refuge of the terminally hopeful or deluded poster. |

Or to make sure a group sees something - like if you're planning the West Bumfuk GTG and by the time 6pm West Bumfuk time rolls around, it's 15 posts down, you "bump" it so that everyone who may want to go to your gettogether sees it.
:)
(I must be terminally hopeful)

i agree with all of these opinions.
but sometimes a bump is warranted because you post something and the target audience misses it because they just didnt happen to get logged on before it got squeezed off the front page.
let's not stigmatize all bumpers :)

Courtesy of Wikipedia:
"BUMP is sometimes used as a backronym for 'Bring Up My Post/Post count' or as a recursive acronym 'Bump Up My Post'.
For inactive threads, this is also called 'necroposting', i.e. thread necromancy, or 'gravedigging', as old threads are said to be dying or dead."
