Having been in a bit of a photographic slump I was really pleased when my nephew asked me to photograph his "high energy rock band" at a gig last week. They were really good and very high energy so I thought I would share a few of the pics here.

Fun stuff. I hate when I have to deal with that wicked color cast from those spot lights. I started shooting with a flash just to overpower it, cause I got sick of all the shots I shot at one venue looking the same because of it.
Flash plus extension cord = woo hoo.
Here are some I took over the weekend as well:
BAND SHOTS
The first band was fine, the 2nd set, I dropped my flash, and it didnt work any more (thank god when I got home, I opened my bad and it was sitting there, powered up and functioning) |

funnily enough the band wanted all of the colour casts to come through as they felt it was more "live"! I did do a lot of flash-inspired shots but they did not feel as good as the non flash ones. Also, most of this was shot at ISO 1600, and the quality was pretty good, too! |

Flash rarely works out well in a stage light situation... I love photographing live music as well. The Little River Band played at our local Oktoberfest and I had the opportunity to shoot photos of them...

Good shots, guys!
My major problem with my band shots was the very low level of the lights when the band was on-stage - really crap to be honest. I was on f/2.8 on the 28-70 all night and used the 50 f/1.8 for a lot of the shots mid set when the lighting seemed to get worse. Good education, though, and taught me a lot about how to get "close" to the band. |

goodjob, in PP it helps to desaturate the red shots a little bit. You will find the detail comes out better. |

I guess I luck out being how I mostly shoot hardcore shows, there is very rarely "lighting" to deal with, and you can get as close as you want to the band because there are no barriers. A lot of the stuff Ive shot, ive taken while on stage, hiding behind amps and sound equipment. |

Thanks for that! I did adjust the WB and desaturated the images a little but, as the lighting was mostly red, I figured that was all I needed to do. Doh!
This is also an occasion where I am glad that I purchased Noise Ninja, too. All of the pp was done with Bibble Pro, including the litho/B&W shot, which proved to be up to the job and did a real fast job of converting 120 pp'd RAW files into 8-bit TIFF for the band's copy of the evening. Probably helped that my new laptop has a high spec dual core running in it, although both processors were maxed out while the conversions were happening.
Interesting learning experience all round, I think. |
