messages? Remember when they first came out, and you could buy tapes of funny things to put on your machine. Then people would call up and be bummed out because you answered the phone when really all that they wanted to do was listen to your message. I miss those funny times. The world is too serious. |

I remember those. When I worked at RadioShack we sold them and they were funny. I guess the fact that all or most all answering machines have gone to digital and the fact that everything has to be politically correct these days, we may never see them again. - it a shame!

When I first moved out on my own, my mother advised me to take my funny answering machine messages off. She said "what if your boss calls?" or "what if your landlord calls?"
I submitted.. |

Funny true story. My friend's hubby is a police officer. One day he got a call at the station and a little old woman was complaining that she got an obscene phone call. They asked her if she knew who called her (caller ID) and she said no, that she had dialed the wrong number. So, instead of her getting a phone call, she called someone and thought it was an obscene phoe call because of the answering machine.

I think all answering machines should be MP3 enabled so you can just move files to them from your computer. That way we could start having fun again. Nobody's Home...Nobody's Home...(Beethoven) <--Remember that one from the commercial! lol |

Folks all over the country still compete weekly on the NPR radio quiz show Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me for the prize of having morning news anchor Carl Kasell record the outgoing message on their home answering machine. |

I change my message every so often and always have a non-standard one (but I do control myself and keep it reasonable).
My favorite one is still Marvin, the paranoid android, even though too many people don't get it :-(
Imagine a very depressed voice: "Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and they leave me here to answer their PHONE! ......" |

I've been using YouMail for my voice mail needs. It's a free service and you can either use any of their many outgoing messages (both serious and humorous) or record your own.
When a voice mail is left for you, an email and/or a text message is sent to you. You can then listen to your message on your PC, or play it from your phone. Oh yeah, you can also call in and retrieve it the "old-fashioned" way. LOL!
Visit their site and browse through all their outgoing messages.

A friend of mine had a great one for a while. It would start with him saying "hello?" then leaving a 5 second gap, then he'd just go "uh huh.... oh really?... wow.... that's great news.... i'm happy for them....who'd have thought?" then after about 30 seconds it would say "actually, leave me a message."
