well from what you posted I woulda try to talk you out of it, but just on what note--
(and I have no experience with any canon macro lens)
But you said macro like your nikon coolpix, and using that P&S in macro mode your use to getting close to your subject..
The focusing distance on the Canon EF-S 60 macro is closer than the 100, so now your macro shots are going to be at more of a distance then your used to..
This isnt a bad thing at all-- now your subjects have more breathing room , but the 60 is (from reviews) just as sharp, cheaper, and also is a stellar portait lens..
Your gonna love the 100, Im sure,, but that would have been my argument, im too late.. |

Will it fit my XTi? Can I operate it remotely from my camera? ;)
Anyway, I'm myself trying to reach a decision on which Macro lens to buy - EF 100 mm, EFS 60 mm or any sigma/tamron.

| OK, I have the same quandry. 60mm or 100mm? Purpose would be to have a better macro capability than my 50mm gives me. Recommendations? |

100mm or longer may be more versatile for macro.
Also note some very good alternatives to canon:
Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Di
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro for Canon |

Yeah, I have honed my don't scare the bug skills with the distance required with my Nikon, but I think I'll manage with the extra space the 100 provides me.

You didn't give us long enough to convince you. Now you're gonna need a 300 buck tripod and 200 dollar head. LOL

I like this one
Don't forget the $300 legs, $150 ReallyRightStuff L bracket for the camera and a $200 macro rail.

You wanted the negative...
When going out shooting or hiking I rarely even think to bring this lens. It's my least used lens. I hardly ever go out just to shoot macros and I have other lens that can do acceptable macros with much better flexibility in other capacities.
But on the positive side, I doubt there is a better macro lens around, and it does do a fantastic job as a fast 100mm prime when you need a 100mm prime.
If cash is holding you back, the 60mm should do the job well or get a lens that does pretty good macros and other things, like the sigma 70-300 dg apo (about $230) which takes macros at 200-300mm (3 feet away).

The distance difference isn't that great. The focusing distances are measured from the sensor plane to the subject. The 100mm lens is significantly longer than the 60mm lens, which is an EFS lens and is more compact. So the glass-to-subject distance is only an inch or so different. Meanwhile, the 60mm Macro is, IMO, a better focal length for all-around work on the APS-C sensor cameras (it's the equivalent of about 100mm on a FF camera) and it is much lighter and more compact, making it easier to hand-hold and a better walkaround lens. Also, the focus is faster than on the 100mm macro.

| The "smaller and lighter" is a very good point, Robert. I did like yours - may have to see if I can try a few before I buy. I may also look at the Tamron Andre mentioned. |

Deb, go for the same lens as above - 100mm Macro
I'm after it myself, I'm hoping to pick up a refurbished one given a chance.

Alright all... as you know I purchased the lens. What you don't know is how pleased I am with it! Thank you all for being so bad at talking me out of it.
I spent half the day shooting photos of my family over Thanksgiving and I just did a couple macro shots to show its capabilities.
I'm going to post them as soon as I do some resizing. |

You should have known that unless a lens just royally stinks that you weren't gonna get much help from us. Actually, perhaps you did know that ;-)
Glad you like the lens.

You won't find it in a DSLR. There are advantages with a P&S sensor that can't be duplicated with a DSLR. That said the 100mm Canon is great, and you'll get yourself a little more distance from your subject with the 180mm. For either you'll need a sturdy tripod, something you probably didn't need with your 5700. Autofocus is fairly useless in macro with a DSLR. Of course all the above IMHO. The DSLR wins hands down with noise and image quality. P&S wins ease of use.

OK, the images are small because for some reason I thought all around dpchallenge had a 640x restriction... That not being the case.. I am too lazy to go through these again.
Now bare in mind these are from my first day of shooting with this lens so I'm a bit ways from refined. None of these are cropped.
Both of these shots were not adjusted for proper white balance:
f/2.8 f/11
This is about as close as I could get before I couldn't focus. Roughly about 13-15cm from the front of the lens.
These were adjusted for wb. These are black pepper and those little red crushed peppers you sprinkle on your pizza!
f/2.8 f/11
_______________________________________________________________________
These were shot over Thanksgiving. My focusing is a bit off, but I kind of like the softness of the pictures for the kids.
f/3.5
This was taken from about 2-3 feet away (I Love That!)
These are my nieces and brother in-law:
f/4 f/3.5
Here are a couple I photoshopped up to look all artsy:
Needless to say I am pleased with my purchase and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone asking.
