Assuming there are enough fellow brits on DPC lamenting another appalling evening of English football.

Surely McClaren's P45 is in the post. Who to replace him?

I keep hearing talk of O'Neill. I missed the game but was keeping track of my mobile. Was it an utterly lamentable defeat or did we play well at times?

the normally impartial BBC are pretty scathing!

Well the first goal was a complete Carson cock-up. The second was the result of extremely poor defending. 2-0 down after 13 minutes. Basically nobody played for the first half and it was shocking.

In the second half McClaren brought on Beckham (who had enthusiasm if little else) and Defoe (rubbish) and the formation/tactics basically went out of the window. Carson redeemed himself with a stunning reaction save from a Croatian corner, and Wayne Bridge hit the post for England. That's our post. Very dodgy moment.

Then we were gifted a soft penalty. Bit of a shirt pull on Defoe who admirably collapsed like a sack of spuds. Lampard stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way.

Then came the only really good bit of England play - a sublime Beckham cross found Crouch who controlled and volleyed with consummate skill. 2-2 and England were in a qualifying position.

Except 15 minutes from the end we gave a Croatian midfielder too much space outside the area and he hit a lovely shot in. Carson might have done better but he saw it late. Short of a Darren Bent shot we never really threatened. We had the desperation but not the means. Sad stuff.

WTF was he thinking with a 4-3-3.. 4-4-2 dragged us this far. And McClaren has no intention of stepping down, better for him to be sacked and get the big payoff, arrogant to the end.

Ah well, at least we can look at booking our summer holiday next year.

From the BBC:

FA to meet over McClaren future

Doesn't sound too good for Steve...

McClaren sacked as England coach

Mourinho the bookies' favourite... just wishful thinking?

wheee! that was some performance of my national team, fantastic. we are all overwhelemed by their patience, knowledge, technique and all.

kinda silly that england does not participate on such big football event such as euro cup, but that's football brutally honest :-)

According to the BBC & Soccernet.com, Fabio Capello is looking for the the England job.

I don't think Mourinho will take it, and i don't see the point in getting O'Neill, as one reporter pointed out- if he wasn't good enough before the hiring of McLaren, why is he good enough now?

But, our performance was shockingly bad. He should have gone with the same midfield that had worked in the past. No Lampard. We missed our first team players like never before though- JT, Rooney, Owen, Rio, all key players, all absent.

Being an England supporter is like being offered the most succulent orange after a week in a desert, but inside is a stinking turd.

I dont think its a case of O'Neill not being good enough, its just the FA wanted a "yes man", someone who would conform. O'neill would be a great choice in my opinion. Mourinho would be a dream signing, but its not going to happen anytime soon. I wouldnt particaurly like Redknapp, although its preferable to Coppell..

To be honest, I dont think it matters who the FA appoint, I think the rot needs to be cleared out at the FA in general, too many admin types and not enough footballing types there.

And the players dont have pride or passion playing for England anymore. They put clubs before country these days.

I think I've blamed everyone now.

I blame Jesus personally...

Beckham was out best player by a mile in that game, the only one who had any balls to go out and do a job. And you'er totally right about the rot needing to be cleared out, but we've stagnated for such a long time that it seems par for the course for the players to be half-arsed about the England games, they still get paid no matter what.

I just think it's stupid that he changes the system that was winning for the biggest game. We had a decent thing going on with the 4-4-2, there was no need to dick things up with whatever the hell formation he was playing it. We were totally bent over by Croatia.

Actually, I could also blame Croatia who played us off the field and quite rightly deserved the win..

I dont think enough people give them credit for how well they did. They had already qualified and they could of fielded a below par side but no, they WANTED to play and they WANTED to win. Hope they do well in the Tournament next summer.

THANKS !! ... this actual national team is better than one from 1998. when they finished 3rd in world cup in france, just for the record. :-)

and thanks again for saying this aloud coz' most of english supporters do not give credit to my national team where it's obvious that they are much better team at the moment

No one in the right frame of mind can take anything away from Croatia. We gave them the space to play in and they outplayed every english man on the field. I was rather suprised the scoreline wasn't somewhere around the 4-1 mark, which I could not have scoffed at had it occurred.

And like Simms mentioned, fair play to them for going out there to win and to go out there to play a game of football and take no prisoners.
