I want to calibrate the colour in my monitor as colours are printing up much brighter than my monitor shows. Probably also affects my submissions as well. There are a lot of free calibration programmes on the internet. Are these safe/useful? Has anyone got a free download that they can recommend?

If you use Photoshop (and maybe even Elements), look in the Windows Control Panel applet. Adobe puts a calibration utility in there, called "Adobe Gamma" or something like that.

I don't think a program will do as good as a Huey or Spyder. I would suggest buying either of those to try. They can be had for as cheap as about $60.

Although I thought my Huey had problems now after printing a few photos I can tell my monitor is much better now.

Have been considering a spyder. Does everyone think that this is the best way to go?

Will see if I can find an Australian Supplier for the Spyder as they are quoting $40 (minimum) shipping!

Newegg - ColorVision Spyder2 Quick - $55.99

Shows that they're out of stock, though.

So I bought Sypder2Express and installed it on my lap top. Now every time I start my laptop up I get the following message:

COLOUR VISION STARTUP
Sorry no calibration data was fund in the profile "sRGB Colour Space Prolfil" for monitor "Plug and Play Monitor". Please select a different profile using "Profile Choose" (1168)

and under that box there is another box with:

PLUG AND PLAY MONITOR
with a picture on my Sypder and the text
Profile: sRGB Colour Space Profile.

Can someone help me as I am not sure what this all mean and what I have to do. Does this mean that currently the setting that were made when I did a calibration aren't being used until I select it?

Monique, your best bet is to try running the program again and see if it corrects the issue. Sounds like it didn't save the color profile the first time or something.

OK thankyou, will see how it goes.

No, it said to deactivate it. I will check though to make sure I did it properly.

I had the same issue with the Spyder 2 Suite. I had to manually assign the profile to the monitor.

Where do I go to manually assign a profile to the monitor?

What OS are you using?

In Windows XP, go to the control panel and choose display.

Then click the settings tab and the advanced button. On the Color Management tab you can add a profile then assign it as the default for the monitor.

Figured it out. Had to go to display setting and add the spyders profile as the default. I think it is working now.

Having bought a new laptop with a lovely bright screen - my first batch of prints were so dark i could have cried - (grandkid's birthday).

Read a few threads on here and i got a Huey on ebay - the rsults are simply astonishing. Highly recommended and ridiculously easy.
