OK, I'm getting random BSoDs which say "IRQL NOT LESS THAN OR EQUAL" and google seems to indicate this is likely a RAM error. There are recommendations to run memtest86 to check your memory.

Apparently my geek days are over. I can't even get far enough to get a working CD-ROM to run the test. I tried copying the .iso file onto a CD-ROM, but that doesn't seem to be the only step needed because it wouldn't run when I rebooted and told the computer to run from the CD-ROM first.

A little help for a geek-impaired guy?

Get a Mac.

you gotta burn the iso as a cd, an iso is a digital cd. just burning the iso onto a cd would put the file on a cd, you must extracet it or burn it with raxio bruner i believe it is. otherwise download daemon tools, from there you can make a fake cd drive and mount the iso image and run it that way

try downloading daemon tools and mounting the image and running it that way then, thats the main purpouse of the iso anyway

How to burn ISO to CD this page has info on a number of different programs that can do this for you.

A low-tech answer (one which is at about my level) might be to try the machine with different configurations of the RAM sticks until you find the one that's causing the problem (that's if it is only one, not more, at fault).

Edit: But I bet you know that already.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll try it today.

And it seems like you are slacking Spaz. It took you nearly 2 hours to tell me to buy a Mac, although I was unaware Macs didn't have problems with faulty RAM.

Never had any problems with mine.

Certainly never had the Mac equivalent to random BSOD's, whatever that would be.

You've never had a Buxom Sweetie Ogle Daddy? It's quite an experience. ;)

My wife's PC had a RAM simm that eventually went bad. Kingston, too.

Make a CD from the memtest ISO. It'll be a bootable CD and the test starts automatically. Insert CD, restart PC. PC's BIOS must have the boot sequence hit the CD before the hard drive, though.

Lot's of scrolling, red text = bad.

If you have more than one RAM simm you'll have to swap one out and run the test to see which one (or both, or none) are bad.

Must be a short term memory failure, too.

I think you need to boot the PC up using the memtest86 disk, so daemon tools won't help as you need to be in Windows to use it.

ISO are image files-- the easiest way to create the cd is to use nero-- most pc's are bundled with it.
Hit the cd tab, click copy/backup, choose burn image to disk--
Choose iso as file type and browse what folder the file is in..

Then like slip said you may have to go into your bios to change the boot sequence.

Jason, were you able to create the cd, any updates?
11/20/2007 08:55:18 PM · #18
Yup, got the iso copied over and it's running right now. Will update when it's done.

Hmm, I came down to check it and I saw a message at the bottom saying "Pass complete, no errors, push esc to exit" but it's still working like it started over. Is it checking the other stick now or is it just doing the same job over again?
11/20/2007 11:38:36 PM · #21
Its most likely starting over again...

Well, so then it's good news - bad news. The good news is the RAM appears to be fine. The bad news then means I don't know what's causing the errors. Fortunately and unfortunately they are uncommon (3 over 2 days). That makes it harder to diagnose. Maybe I'll try the event viewer next time.

Doc, have you added any new hardware at all recently, including external USB or (especially) Firewire devices?

if it craps out again, take a picture of the BSOD and email me or post it...
