The really sad part of the story is that we'll "have" to accept it. Let's face it, it's Microsoft's way or the highway with PCs. It sucks, but them's the facts. I don't like it at all, but I figure I'm gonna have to get used to it. I'll put it off as long as possible, but I'm sure that in the end, I'll succumb to Microsoft's pressures and learn the new interface(s).

That's what Microsoft would like you to think. Unless you're doing some really advanced stuff with spreadsheets and such, try OpenOffice. Chances are, you won't look back.

Yup... and fully compatible with all Office formats. It's truly a great product. The only thing it's really missing is an annoying animated paper clip.

Unfortunately, the lack of compatibility between MS Office and OpenOffice is why I had to switch back to MS Office. It's not fully compatible. I have a set of form documents I'm required to use in my school program, and OpenOffice trashes them when saving them in the MS Office format. This particular issue was so severe that my department head called me in to determine if I had been illegally modifying these documents. I had to prove to him it was the software I was using rather than something I did intentionally.

I agree that OpenOffice is good enough most of the time, and my case is probably not a common one.

John its such a shame that your thread got so far away from the original topic. I just wanted to say thanks for posting out the link to the great deal. I wish I could use it. I have to wonder had the original hijack been diverted back on topic by SC rather then being hijacked in another direction if someone could actually remember what the thread was about in the first place.

BTW I did download openoffice.org and the first XLS file I used it on was trashed by it and it even warned me that it would be saved in a format that office 97, 2000, and XP might not be able to use.
