Alright everyone...
It has been about 1-month since I purchased the XTi + Kit Lens and already I'm searching for my Nikon5700s macro capabilities.
I've done quite a bit of research and was thinking about going with the Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 Macro Lens.
It has pretty much received high reviews around the board and I've seen some excellent photo examples. So instead of asking everyone why this lens is a good buy, I'd rather hear why this lens would be a bad buy.
In other words, talk me out of buying this lens (if you can).

It wouldn't be a bad buy. Other than making you never use your kit lens again and end up on a road paved with expensive future lens purchases, expensive tripods, expensive tripod heads, lighting, remotes and printing.
Just say no. |

Gordon, did you subscribe to your own advice? Or are you heavily addicted to lens upgrades?

NstiG8tr, there is a Canon rebate until January 13, 2008 for $35.00.
Macro Lens
Not a huge amount, but enough to tempt me.

I think I'm mostly through the other side. I bought Ls but don't use them much. A couple of prime lenses meet almost all my shooting needs, at lest this year. All I want is a wide angle prime and I think I'll be happy.
Just one more fix.

| Sorry, gotta side with the others... buy it, you will not be sorry. It's a wonderful macro lens, and a great general purpose short telephoto lens to boot. Outstanding for portraits. |

Oh that reminds me. There's a bad thing about that lens. It's too sharp for portraits.

Yeah, I read that... I also read nothing a simple soft focus filter or post processing can't fix.

Purchasing that lens could potentially cause envy amongst your peers on DP Challenge causing resentment and jealousy. Except with me mostly because I shoot Nikon ;)

It's a great lens - very versatile, great colour/ contrast too.
These were all shot with that lens, over an hour or so. It's just really crisp for portraits - works for some subjects though.

.
edit to add: Oops! I didn't realize that you went ahead and bought it.

Hey check out www.slrgear.com They have reviews on any lens you are looking for. They also have what is called the Blur index. This is pretty cool. It is a 3D graph with sliders on each side. One is for your fstops and the other slider is for your focal length. When you play with these sliders it shows you where in the image plain will be the sharpest and where it tends to fall off. I spend some time there comparing lenses and prices and checking out what the pros have to say.
Check it out! |
