RobM, there's no need to be so harsh; a nice acetylene blowtorch or a power drill would work just fine.

On a serious note.......8>)

Do you mean, WHERE should you try first, or HOW to actually change them?

Just briefly from a guy who has no technical skills, as far as where my settings are.....

Auto WB, Shutter priority 'til I get the hang of the light where I'm shooting, ISO 200 (Your XTi should go to 100), dead 0 on all the settings that govern flash timing, single frame, no noise reduc, full sharpness, high saturation, image size large (Generally not optional if shooting RAW) I do shoot in RAW, though if you wanna shoot JPEG, use the fine & large settings, beep on 8>), AF assist on, Center-weighted focusing.....

These settings are what I use, which means that they are probably the most innocuous and easy.......they should cover GEBERAL USAGE and are a STARTING POINT.

Someday, I'll actually venture into the realm of doinking with my camera to do special stuff, Jeffrey, Catherine, Svetlana, and others are certainly more adept than I and can enlighten you, but I'm too busy having fun just being out there to doink around much. I know I should take a couple of hours and photograph the same subject with various different settings, but I get out there, and my mind just goes nuts and I shoot everything.

So there you have the way I do it which could be the "Idiot's Guide to DSLR Settings" if you just can't be bothered to do the whole grownup read the manual, study, and learn thing.

Of course, if all you wanted to know was how to unlock the controls on your XTi, you can ignore all this crap and I am *NO* help at all 'cause I have a Nikon!.......8>)

on my 20D, if you go to the orange section of the menu, you'll see a heading called customise. there's a whole range of stuff you can change there - your flash sunc - to start or finish of shutter, turn on 3200 iso, lots and lots of stuff. it will probably be the same for you.

Of course I've read the manual (I was an IBM mainframe systems engineer in my former life, and that was always the first requirement). So I know how to adjust the settings. I just don't know which produce the best result. I have played with them, but I'm looking for a good recipe. The above info is useful. Thank you Jeb.

I am shooting in RAW most of the time, and use ISO 200 - 400 most of the time in order to use a fast shutter speed. I didn't pump up the sharpening or saturation, because I thought that might be a problem in PP. I'm going to try doing that now. Thanks again.

Set the correct date/time.

If you are shooting using the automatic settings there are really no defaults you have to change. Your best friend, when you use automatic settings, is setting exposure compensation. You should know how to change the ISO, disable the flash, and format cards. If you use jpeg files, make sure the image ecording quality is L (smooth curve).

If you are manually setting your aperture/shutter speed and/or using raw files, email me and I will give you more specific advice.

And save up for "L" lenses.

I tend to shoot aperture priority. If just out and about, I'll set it to 6.3 and leave it there, adjusting the ISO to keep the shutter speed high enough to prevent camera shake. With the 30D (ah, the memories!) I shoot RAW plus small jpeg. The small jpegs make it easy to review the shots; then I can process from RAW if I want to. I don't mess too much with the contrast, etc, since I can do that in post if I want to. I do have a setting for B&W on the 30D which will only affect the recorded jpeg - but it gives me an idea of how things will look in black and white - I shoot that way often. The RAW, of course, is still the full color information.

Thanks Julianne - nice to know there is someone else out there with the same problem. I've never owned an slr or dslr so the learning curve for me will be STEEP!

Already read the manual, the quick start guide and everything else in the package. Starting on my second of probably what will be MANY times reading the manual...but thanks for the advice. I'm one that always reads the directions first.

Set the correct date/time already and have the recording quality @ JPEG L. Thank you :)

Here's a self-congratulatory little thingie, subject to the chairperson's approval, of course:

I'll second that, and add that today is "Remembrance Day" in England (where I live, though I'm not from here). I was in the grocery store this morning, and at 10:59 they announced that at 11:00 there would be a minute of silence in remembrance of those who have given their lives or have fought for our safety. It was loud as hell, people ordering things, dropping things, talking on their phones, paying for groceries . . . you could barely hear the announcement (it's a big store).

At 11:00, they announced (a bit louder this time), that it was 11:00am. Registers (which are called "tills" here in the UK) stopped; orders stopped; one baby cried for a second or two (which caused my two-year-old daughter to say, "Oh, baby crying"; I shushed her). And then nothing. For 60 seconds it was quiet -- not a harsh, false quiet, but a soft, gentle one, whispering with reverence, one that said people were there, but were silent in remembrance. This was followed by a relatively soft "thank you" over the speakers, and the noise level rose again.

I read in the paper today that 1 out of 4 homeless people in the U.S. are veterans.

I wish more people would take some time to parse the phrase: Support Our Troops.

I just buried my father-in-law here in August, a veteran of both WWII and Korea.

He was a truly interesting and terrific guy and I'm glad I had the pleasure of knowing him for a quarter of a century.

He was a fighter pilot.....one of those guys that flew bomber escort for planes like Memphis Belle way deep into German airspace and was shot down three times, yet still crawled back in the damn thing and went up again and again. He was also one of those humble guys that did not talk about it.....I had to find most of what I know about him through family, military records, and friends.

He was a 10/10ths kind of guy, an all time great American Hero, and my friend....I miss him.

For so many people, "Talk is cheap". There is no support for our troops once they return home. Sad isn't it?

I'm in for Duo-Tones with a shot that I really hadn't known I was going to get 'til I shot it last night and it has an added special effect that I can't wait to share.

And......maybe it's a sign of growth and/or improvement, but it's another that I just like and the heck with how it scores.

That said, I think it's not going to be middle of the road.....I think it'll either do really well, or I'm gonna get spanked *hard*.

Channel 4 here in the UK is running a show tomorrow called: "Forgotten Heroes: The Not Dead."

There are many still missing in action personnel from conflicts dating from WWII thru Korean War, Vietnam and probably will be from recent conflicts. Our thoughts should be with the families at this time. Many have given their lives so we can live in relative peace today. I have watched the parades on TV each year since I was a kid, and I still stand for two minutes of silence and I cannot go through this event without a tear in my eye.

May the Gods of these people watch over their tortured souls and give them eternal peace.

Thanks Peter. I'll wait for Deb and our Fearless Leader to give approval. I noticed one small problem: it's gender specific.

P.S. I love the choir of little birds.
