I am enjoying the "tell us something odd about yourself" thread. Thought this would be interesting.....list foods you have never eaten, not even one taste of it.
-grits
-pomegranate
-heart/kidney/tongue
-sushi
-devilled eggs
-any game meat except rabbit and moose (both of which I hate)
-artichoke
And probably 100's of other foods that are specific to certain regions and not available here.

Hrmmmm...
Grits are just cornmeal. If you ever have had polenta, that's the italian version of grits. If you ever have had cornbread, that's basically grits cooked up dry...
Pomegranates are delicious. If you like cranberry, you'll probably like pomegranates.
If you have ever had giblet gravy on your turkey you have eaten turkey hearts.
Sushi is an acquired taste for sure; I dislike it intensely myself, though some are more palatable than others.
Deviled eggs? What you got against those? That's just a hard boiled egg with the yolks mashed up and mixed with other stuff. There's a zillion ways to make 'em. Do you dislike mayo, is that why? You can make deviled eggs without mayo.
Game is also an acquired taste. It tends to taste, well... gamy... :-)
Artichokes? Why not? They also are delicious, and fun to eat too :-)

I don't think grits are available here, I'm in eastern Canada. I've heard other people taking about them and how they didn't like them, so I guess I don't want to go out of my way to eat them.
I've seen pomegranates in the grocery store but to be honest I don't know how to eat them! They are full of seeds. I can take or leave cranberries.
I've had gravy made from turkey drippings but the heart and liver get thrown out before the gravy is made.
I don't even want to try sushi, it doesn't look or sound appetizing to me.
I hate eggs. Period. I used to eat boiled and fried eggs as a child but I cannot imagine eating cold eggs. I tried an egg sandwich once in my life and hated it.
Artichokes are the same as pomegranates to me, I've seen them in the store but have no idea how to eat them. And they don't look appetizing. They look like a table decoration.

Absolutely no reason not to eat shark. It's one of the firmest-fleshed, least fishy of the fishes. Of course, not alls harks taste good, but the ones you buy in the market all are perfectly edible, and they tend to be less expensive than popular fish. Mako shark and Thresher shark are two of the best varieties.

Lots of stuff, but keeping with current inclusions,
Dog (or more specifically, puppy) or any other type of pet animal.
I've had venison, pheasant, and kangaroo. (didn't like them)
I load french fries with ketchup, but hate tomatoes. |

I've never eaten anything exoctic or something you don't normally see at your regular grocery store except....
MUSHROOMS !!!
I refuse to eat fungus.. I can't even stomach their smell if cooking.. If I order a pizza and it's got mushrooms on it by mistake, I lie and tell the pizza company they have to bring a new one because I'm allergic to them.. :-).. works every time !! |

Things my extended family eat and that I refuse to touch with a ten foot pole...
chitterlings
squid/octopus
scrapple
any internal organs (heart, kidneys, liver, etc.)
any wild animal (game)
mushrooms
And for the record, if anyone is even cooking chitterlings, I won't enter their house.

I believe grits are hominy that has been dried and ground. Yes, hominy is corn, but it's been soaked in lye as part of its processing. Don't worry though, the lye is washed off.
Artichokes?? I refer to them as "Barf 'n Chokes" |

Right. The lye part is actually extremely valuable. It breaks down certain shields in the corn and makes it much more nutritional. The ancients in America understood this, and the Europeans who took corn back to the Old World did not. End result: outbreaks of a nutritional deficiency/disease called pellagra.
But, as I said, "basically" corn meal. Wasn't going to deep into it.
