Inspired by Deb's thread My limited view of Afganistan.

On October 17th I was given an opportunity to go tour some of the bases in AL Anbar Province where I am currently stationed. My job isnt one where I get to go out very often/ever so I jumped all over the opportunity. Every so often the commanding general tours the bases he is in charge of to see how they are doing, what he can do to make life better for the marines stationed at those locations. That being said I was invited by one of the marines tasked with being the generals PSD (personal security detachment) to come along and take photos of the events that took place that day. This was the day after I recieved my ID MkIII so i was extremely anxious to see what this camera could do. We boarded on a CH-53E which is a heavy lift helicopter capable of lifting cargo/tanks and various other vehicles. This was no more than just a routine flight for the pilots and the flight crew, bringing mail and other essentials nessicary to upkeep the other bases. But for me, it my first helicopter ride. I didnt know what to expect, I had my Mk3 on me and thank God it is dust and moisture resistant. because when we took off that first time there was so much dust and dirt spinning around
in the aircraft. But thats what that camera is for right? Lol. Most of the time we were flying the other chopper was way off in the distance so i couldnt get a good shot of them. and when they were "close" enough to take a picture they were behind the exaust of the chopper i was in so most of those pictures came out very blurry and worthless. But there was one that turned out alright.

We flew for about 45 minutes and we landed in Korean Villiage which is one of the smaller bases only capable of supporting rotary wing aircraft. We spent a good hour and a half here and then flew off to the next base Al Qaim. During the flight to Al Qaim is where I took my Free study entry.

Various other pictures from Al Qaim

Various other pictures from Korean Villiage

Various other pictures from flying

Back at Al Asad after we landed back at "home" i snapped this one with my point and shoot as we were walking away

All in all I had a great time and even better experience. Im greatful I got invited to go. it was a nice change in the day to day routine Ive been doing for the past 10 months.
