Hopefully...I will be back next month with a new camera. My Toshiba finally gave up the ghost and refuses to focus. Have an entry in October free study that I took at the beginning of the month...but that will unfortunately be it for the time being
If you want to bump me from Team Chasing Butterflies ...I will understand.

FYI, last day to nominate any DPC member (Team Suck or otherwise) for a free subscription to B&W magazine. Just send me a PM on who you think deserves a subscription. |

I hate dialup SOOOOOO much I've been trying for an hour to upload an entry, and it won't go because of this absolute sh*t connection!!!!
There is *NO* excuse fot it either, except that the phone company's too cheap to upgrade.
So I may lose out on entering a challenge 'cause I can't get it uploaded.
This *REALLY* sucks!!!!!

Well, after the eleventy-seventh try......it went!!!
So.....I've coughed up another mediocre shot for my continuing saga of the highest ranked Sub-6 scorer in the marathon...
And....BOO!!!!
I'm in for Halloween!

Been a bit quiet as I settled back into the UK after my US visit and tried to catch up on all I missed here. Have a shot in for Free Study, and my "New" shot is at about 5.4 (which is probably where it should be, so no worries there).
Jeb, we definitely reach a plateau, and it can be a bit frustrating. I finally broke 6+ consistently -- except when I'm busy getting 4.6s which Team Suckers like :) -- and have all 6+ scores on my page, but can't break 6.3. I know my Free Study won't do it, and neither will "new" (obviously). But I'm having a great time shooting, got a "new" lens (an "old" Tamron 28-200, real nice for walking around), and that's what it's all about for me (hope to edit up a couple of my Washington shots for y'all to see, one special one in particular). I know how life gets to us sometimes, and Jeb, I'm hoping you're breathing a bit more freely soon (Internet connection notwithstanding); remember, breathing is good :)
Terry, excellent news! How fun!!
Deb, thanks for continuing to share where you are with those of us who are not there; it reassures me to see the place for some reason, especially through your eyes.
Svetlana, I don't really know you except for your images and a post from awhile back, but welcome back :)
Jayson, awesome observations on RobM's style; extremely well seen and spoken.
Jeffrey, Rob's not the only Rob who likes your take on staircases (and other things architectural).
I missed some, I know it, but I tried :)
Good luck to all who are "in" for challenges!
Best,
Rob

Well, I am in for the October free for all! Not likely to break into my front page but hopefully 6 territory. :)
Good luck to all at rollover tonight! (hopefully it will be a treat and not a trick...)
ETA: I just checked my submission from a different computer and it looks like crap! lets hope that folks have calibrated their monitors. (wishful thinking, I know)

I got back from trick-or-treating early enough to where I could submit a picture for the Halloween challenge, but none of the ones I took are DPC worthy. Maybe next year. |

Last week I was stopped at a stoplight and looked over at the house beside me. They had a halloween display with cobwebs and such, and a fake person on the porch with a plastic skull for a head. Just as I glanced over there was a squirrel peeking his head out of the skull! It would have been a great photo, but I did not have my camera with me, and it was on private property so I likely would have shot it, then knocked on the door and offered them a copy of the image.
Bottom line is that I did not have my camera with me. Who here takes their camera everywhere? I don't because I am too afraid of it getting stolen on me if I forget it is with me.

Mine is too bulky to carry everywhere comfortably, but I've been unhappy with the pictures I get from my wife's SD450 (or whatever it is). And, technically, I'm not supposed to bring my camera into the building where I work, so I have to be sneaky when I do. |

Hey guys - I got up EARLY this morning so I could sit in a freezing cold trailer-office and steal some computer time. Problem is the fingers aren't moving very quickly at the moment.... (The "free" access at the computer lab has become so slow I can't get my Google email to load... sigh. So no email for awhile - it's blocked on the office computers.)
Jeb, very nice insights. Worthy of reminders to others who bemoan stupid things like "score" (speaking to self at the moment).
RobH - how much longer are you going to be in Jolly Old? I seem to recall until summer, right? (Trying to figure out when I'll visit...)
Jayson - very nice selection and analysis of RobM's shots.
Eve - hang in there and consider a loan to get that camera early... :-) (I know, I know - I'm bad...)
Terry - WOO HOO!!!!! Email Pawdrix and see if he'd be willing to take a picture of your picture if you don't know anyone else to do it. And I understand there are webcams of the area you can sit and watch to see your picture. Way to go!
And Ernie, I just bought a P&S to complement my DSLR - and so I'll have a camera with me more often. It fits in the sleeve pocket of my uniform, which is very handy. And a nod to all of our P&S'ers here - I find it MUCH harder to use than my DSLR, believe it or not. So my hats off to you guys.
Kelli - how are you doing these days? And Brian, if you're still reading here, check in and say "hi" once in awhile! :-)
Glad the Canadians enjoyed the pic of Timmys. I also enjoyed the coffee and the donuts while I was there.

Eve, consider borrowing a simple point and shoot camera from a friend. Many people have those that they only use for vacations and family snap shots. At least you could still participate. And you might be surprised by the results. After all, much of the fun is coming up with the ideas and/or finding the shots. |

Well, I have bought a second SB600 flash unit to go with my D200. The reason is because I want to create a set up for doing in-home pet photography. The two SB600's can be controlled wirelessly by my camera.
I did a test shoot tonight to see how it would work. I had one with a Micro Appollo modifier on it, and the second was bounced off of the low ceiling. I used a fleece blanket I bought for this purpose as the backdrop. Here is the result: [thumb]607488[/thumb]
One unexpected problem was that my cat blinked at the sound of the mirror moving, so I got a bunch of pics of her with her eyes closed. I solved that by using mirror up mode. so when I press the shutter the first time the mirror goes up and the cat blinks, then I am looking above the camera and when she opens her eyes I take the picture. That worked well.
What do you think? (the pic is my kitty Siron)

I have no idea what you're talking about with the flashes (totally clueless on flash) but whatever set up you're using is providing nice even light. It's almost a bit too even, maybe, but that depends on what you're after. Very smart idea with the mirror up thing! |
