So, since my last challenge (in which I received my first ribbon) I took some time off from DPC. I got a lot done, both with my career, family, and photography. For the photography aspect, I've been quite active behind the scenes...

- I've gotten more intimate with my Canon EOS 40D.

- I have been shooting just about all my shots in Manual mode. My sports photography is where I haven't used "M". Opportunities during a soccer match happen much to quickly to use that mode (at least for me). It's been years since my Canon AV-1 manual mode days, so I'm getting back into the swing of it.

- Purchased a wireless shutter release for my 40D.

- Bought the Opteka Professional Battery Grip.

- Upgraded to CS3. Works really well with the new Canon 14-bit RAW files.

- Outgrew my combo laptop/camera bag, and went with the Tamrac Adventure 9 (in black) laptop/camera backpack.

- Attended the Samy's Professional Photography Expo. It was a decent, small event (it was Samy's first). While there, I watched Nikon reps clean countless sensors. I was literally standing right next to them, so I now know how to do it confidently--if I ever need to. I also played around with many lenses, including Canon's EF 600mm f/4L IS USM lens. What a sweet piece of glass! I also sat down and had hands-on, instructor-lead tutorials on Apple's Aperture. That is some nice software--too bad it doesn't run under Vista! ;-) There were also a few studio setups with live photo shoots ranging from live models to still-life food photography. Lowepro was also there, so we could "try on" all their bags. There were many more vendors and booths to mention here.

- Received a bunch of free camera straps, logo'ed with my company's logo. These were modeled after the Optech Pro Loop Strap. I will be giving these out to my fellow photographers on a project where I currently am consulting. These straps are much better than what Canon gives you. The soft neoprene absorbs much of the camera weight and really makes carrying it a breeze. I also like the quick-release feature so I can remove the strap when on a tripod during long exposures on a windy day.

Whew...what else have I been up to? I'll think of more and add to this thread later.

Thanks everyone.

I'll post some photos later. I have to figure out which one to enter for the Free Study. The ones I don't enter will be the candidates for uploading here.

This afternoon, I plan on putting my new battery grip to the test for the first time at a soccer match. I normally take 150-300 shots per match with most being horizontally oriented. With the grip, I hope to capture much more in vertical orientation, using all the buttons, the dial, and shutter on the grip.

Thanks, Bear.

So, I'm back from my first ever shoot with the battery grip, and here's my "n00b-with-a-battery-grip" story...

I feel like such a beginner. :-( I'm out there and when I shoot vertical, the strap kept getting in the way. I thought to myself, "damn, does everyone have this problem or do they just remove their strap?"

Well, it turns out that there is a place on the bottom of the grip to connect a strap. So, I moved the strap from the shutter side of the camera body to the bottom of the grip, and life was good. :-)

Today was a very humbling day for me, too. I pretty sure that no matter how much effort I put into photography, theres always something thats gonna make me feel like a noob...

And here I thought for sure you meant you were going to be giving these out to your DPL teammates. Dangit he says.

Welcome back
