Any chance we could add in a Lens field and a focal length field along side the other shot details of aperture, shutter and ISO ? Seems there are a lot more people using SLRs and it would be interesting info to capture. Just have it as optional.

Also, I'd still really love to have the shutter/ aperture/ ISO information available during voting. Might make a lot of the shutter speed comments for sports more tied to the reality of the situation and help improve the feedback available ?

I really like adding the focal length and lens used. I know I found myself asking "what lens did you use" when I look at shots from DSLRs. I try to add that info. in the comments, but I think seperate fields would be nice.

I'm not sure how showing the shutter/aperture/ISO could improve the voting process. I think some voters would concentrate too much on those figures. I can just imagine the endless comments of "should have used a smaller apreture to increase depth of field". Could tip off which ones are DSLRs too (high F number). I don't know, but it might be worth discussing.

I don't know that it would improve the voting, but I think it would improve the commenting. There are various shots in sports where you could give a more useful comment if you know the shutter speed for example.

Adding the focal length and lens used is a great idea. Perhaps in the future we could have the possibility to search photos by lens used. It could be very helpful when buying a new lens.

I think it is terrific idea.

Would you put in the focal length, or the 35mm equivalent of the focal length? (i.e., do you put in 200mm, the actual focal length of the optics, or 320mm on a 10D but 300mm on a D100 to compensate for the crop factor?) Would you have to specify a manufacturer, or could you just say "50mm". Do you include the maximum aperture of the lens to differentiate betwen the Canon 50mm/1.4 and Canon 50mm/1.8? If so, how do you format it so it is consistent and easily searched?

I think it is a great idea also, I asked for some of this info to be added last month.

I think it is a good idea to add to the info, but not to the photo during voting. The image is the image the photographer created and should be judged and commented as is. To play devil's advocate, why not put the camera make and model on there while voting too: "Hey, your picture sucks -- should have used a 10D :)". No, I like it as is during voting.

However, knowing the lens after the fact and making this searchable would be great. I imagine adding a pull-down in addition to the camera pull-down when entering in your submission information. When I enter my submission, I can choose which camera I used to create the shot -- my E-10 or my 10D. I only have these two choices because those are the cameras I entered in my profile. Likewise, why not have a registered lens pull-down, associated with that camera? When I pick my 10D as the camera, another pull-down would have all the lenses I've registered I own for this camera. If I choose the E-10, the lens pull-down would only include my E-10 lenses.

It would take some work to set up the lists in the first place -- all known lenses for all the listed camera types, but not impossible. The list of available lenses is finite and I'm sure you'd have help, if asked.

i agree, with hgpayne on having it after the voting like the other info, such as f-stop and what not.

One other thing -- what happens if the photo is cropped?

For example, if I take a macro shot with my 100mm lens, and crop out a 50% sub-section, how do you calculate and then indicate the new "effective" focal length?

It gets even more complicated when you crop to non-sensor-ratio size, since the crop factor in the X & Y directions is then different...
