That is what I am worried about. I have family in Ft. Myers. M aybe one year I will plan a vacation down there around the time the shuttle launches if it gets cancelled then I swim in my Mom's pool for a week.

we were supposed to see a rocket launch once while in FL. But the weather kept it from happening. It launched the day after we left.
I plan on catching a Shuttle Launch someday.

Maybe they're saving their pics for either From the Ground Up or Distance! ;)

Maybe we should plan a GTG around a shuttle launch?

Edit Date SEPTEMBER 8, 2006
I was right seat in my friend Sue's airplane when we saw the shuttle launch. This was taken just northwest of Fort Lauderdale through the glass and prop.

Pics from todays Discovery launch. We hear the sonic boom here, when they pass over on the way to landing at the Cape.

And related to the proposed GTG:

Not my photo, but one taken from orbit by one of the ISS astronauts of the shuttle launch. I think it gives an interesting Point of View. You'll need to expand it to see the shuttle boosting to orbit. |

Do you have a link to the original of this image? I'd rather pull it off of Nasa's page...

I'd like to see that shot as it appears on a NASA site, too. It's an amazing shot, but part of me is having a hard time believing it's from the ISS. It just doesn't seem like it was shot from a high enough altitude to really be from that vantage point. Looks to me more like it was shot from a jet. |

That would have been my guess :) My first thought was that it would have been quite a remarkable coincidence that the ISS was passing over at exactly the time of the shuttle launch in the first place.
The ISS zips across the horizon fast enough that it's only visible for about 3 minutes when it passes over, so that would have been quite a piece of timing in the first place. And the shot itself obviously just didn't look like it had the altitude.

I saw a launch back in June while on holiday. Amazing sight.
Funny how it looks like it`s going up at an angle, when really it`s the earth turning away from it.

Good catch dwterry and alanfreed.
You can't trust any picture anymore! And I was fooled by this one. However, it is a real photo and it does indeed show a unique perspective on the shuttle launch. |

I love the picture and was hoping to download a full size version of it. I didn't even think about the perspective until Alan brought it up. It's amazing what kinds of things snopes.com knows about. :-)
