OK, here's an article that I find completely ridiculous...

drawing a gun

Now, here's my rant...

My 8 year old son got a one week suspension this week from his bus, meaning that I have to drive him to and from school. She actually started out the conversation by saying "I'm sorry if this causes you to lose a week of work, but". The reason, he gave a girl on the bus a raspberry because she called him a name. The girl who called him a name was not disciplined in any way. If you don't know what a raspberry is, it's when you stick your tongue out between your lips and blow making a rude noise. When the principle called me she said that he "spit" on a girl on the bus. I was astounded and asked for further clarification. I just couldn't picture my son spitting on anyone. She then explained that it was in fact a raspberry that he gave the girl but said that she considered that spitting, in fact an exchange of bodily fluids! HUH? My question to any "school" people out there, aren't things being taken to far and too seriously at such a young age? The write up, which will follow him in his school records is that he spit on another child when in fact he didn't. Opinions????

Write an official complaint letter to the school board. If you don't get a response, send it to your local newspaper.

James Taranto from the Wall Street Journal also frequently writes about dumb school decisions in a section of his blog called Zero Tolerance Watch. It's not an every-day feature, but often enough that he might be interested in your story.

When I was a kid in the 1980s, I was tormented on the bus daily. They often spit in my hair, and I don't mean raspberries, I mean hock a loogie spit. I was the very last kid dropped off on the route, and I sometimes had to sit there with spit in my hair for an hour. Neither the bus driver nor the school ever did a damn thing. They probably should have, but even I knew it would just ultimately make things worse.

On the other end of the spectrum, I was about ten or eleven when I'd had enough of this one kid's bullying and backhanded him. Hard. We were lining up to go back inside after recess, and it's entirely likely that a teacher saw it. Kid never bothered me again. But if the school had punished me it wouldn't have had any effect except to punish a victim of bullying and open the door to more of the same.

Strangely enough, I turned out okay. Amazing, isn't it? :P

Interestingly, the adult version of that same kid found me on MySpace last week and made a point of saying hello. It's the second time inside a year that one of my childhood bullies has found me and become an internet friend.

But my point in linking the article is that NJ is notorious for making these types of decisions and the school board in all probability would agree with the principle. Kindergartner's suspended for playing cops and robbers using their fingers as guns is as stupid as it gets! I guess I was just raised in a different time and I don't get the over zealous reaction to what I consider typical childhood behavior.

Trust me, if I could afford NJ's school taxes AND private school tuition, I would go that route.

What do you expect. They want to control your child's actions and thoughts. Many public schools think parents are really dumb and they think that they should brain wash our mind-numb robots children into their views and ways. Just think they propose teaching sex ed. in kindergarteners, because they want to run our personal/moral lives too. This is a major reason we home school, there is no union thug school teachers controlling our children's thoughts and actions.

If I were you I would go to the next school board meeting and raise a lot of hell. Then everytime you disagree with what the say, give them a good old raspberry and make sure its a wet slobbery one. Then just smile at them, they won't get it.

Ever since I watched Jesus Camp, homeschooling scares me.

That lady showing her children "educational" videos that talk about how fossils are fake and that dinosaurs and man roamed the earth together, and not teaching them science because it goes against god...makes me reallly scared for the future.

I didnt read the article but here's my thoughts on your son:

I dont think your child should have been suspended for a whole week for the "raspberry". I mean if that's what it was then maybe a day at the most. I mean he is only 8. However, it is kinda disgusting if you think about it. I mean if you were face to face with an adult and they did this so called Raspberry and spit flew in your face would you be mad? I know i'd be punching someone.

I think the other child should have gotten in trouble also.

But as for your statement below.... No I dont think people are over- reacting. I think kids today should be taught right from wrong while they are young. So many kids are out of control by the time they turn 13 it's ridiculous. I'm 30 and we didnt act like the way kids do today. And as for you not wanting the "spitting" on his record? Well he may not have coughed up and spit, but his saliva shot out of his mouth into the girls face. And to me that's gross. I had a 5 yr old spit on me when I was 9. You know what I did? I punched that little snot in her face. That little brat never did anything to me again.

And you weren't expelled? Exactly how is punching out another kid (half your age) for doing something wrong to you better than giving them a raspberry? This is your lesson for how to teach right from wrong -- to physically assault those who offend you? I sense just a wee bit of hypocrisy in you post ...

I wasnt in school. I was in my yard. This little 5 yr old was a terror from hell. Every time I told her mom what she did to me her mom never did anything. So I stopped it myself. If bully's get their asses whipped when they are young maybe they will think twice about messing with someone else.

Edit to add: Maybe Kelli's son should have punched that other kid...bet she wont call any more names LOL....and he wouldve still gottin 5 days suspension so how would he lose?

Well maybe if it was a boy who did it. I don't promote males hitting females.

I can understand this, but before Adam bit the apple, the the world was pure and no killing. So, some Christians believe that preditors were created by God after this first sin. So, maybe radical, maybe not. But evolution is still a theory and all links are being questioned each bone discovery.

People are overreacting to the rspberry. thats dumb, the kid should have been told thats not good, dont do it. kids dont make the sound to spit intentionally, they do it for the sound because they think its funny. and hitting is alot worse then spitting - thats something you dont want a teen doing every time theyre mad. believe me, nobody walks around in my high school blowing raspberries at each other; they've long since grown out of that.

How is this even a question when carbon dating has proven fossils to be millions of years older then any of the earliest forms of human existence?!

It just frightens me that people who are being taught this revisionist, white washed education are growing in masses, and are going to be voting and making decisions for the good of the country. Scares me more then anything else.

Yeh well nice quoting how I said her kid didnt deserve to be suspended for a whole week. and as for the teenagers....i'd rather be hit then spit on.

carbon dating Here is a web site give an interesting argument for not believing carbon dating and why some Christians think carbon dating is bogus. As a biologist, I have been thinking, what if the evolution is more recent. Does it really matter or not, not sure. But might bring God back into our schools as it was before and students were much more respectible and most teachers really taught.

Sorry I didn't mean to steal your original rant. Van

God in schools causes teachers to really teach? By giving them a cop out answer for everything?! If you can't explain it, it must be God!

I mean isn't even the concept of evolution blasphemous, yet as a biologist you have seen evidence of mutations and evolution amongst cingle celled organisms, bacteria, etc?

Not trying to argue, but that seems like a very perplexing concept, a (conservative im assuming) christian, working in a field such as biology.

Yes, an I used to be an active member in Audubon (many offices held), worked for National Wildlife Federation off and on for 10 years, did an Outdoor education stint in Ohio (there I was labeled a conservative conservationist, in 1981) and I'm usually the only conservative amoung the groups. It was fun, but getting to old for the non-sense. I believe in evolution, but not sure when it began. Mutations usually lead to death not new species. My favorite saying is adapt, migrate or die. Back to original discussion.

I certainly do NOT promote males hitting females either, but that is NOT to be misconstrued as meaning that I would tolerate that type of behaviour from a female ... an assault is an assault regardless of the genders involved.

Sorry. Off topic (and probably argumentative) â€Â¦ but it’s been so slow around here rant-wise.

Originally posted by ajdelaware:

Carbon dating is only good up to about 50,000 years. Other types of radiometric dating is used for dating rocks to the millions of years.

Isn̢۪t the Christian God omnipresent? How can one bring a god back into a place that it can̢۪t, by definition, leave?

Most mutations are neutral. As a biologist, you really should know that.

You've got a case. The suspension seems unwarranted, and I'm sure there will be a public advocate that would help you reach a resolution. As suggested, start by writing a letter to the editor of your local paper.
