Im looking at getting one of the above but there is a HUGE price difference
1.8 = $239
1.4 = $1100
Is the 1.4 really worth that much more?
I know that its a fair bit wider and narrower dof, but still....
Any thoughts?

Your prices seems way off.
At B&H Photo, the Nikon 50mm 1.8 is $114.95.
The 50mm 1.4 is $284.95.
If you expected to pay your quoted prices, buy them both.
Add about $50 for international shipping (5 to 7 days) to Austrailia.

Was about to say, that's expensive!

Exchange rate is $1.12 AUS to $1.00 US.
So, the f1.8 will cost you $170.75. (f1.8 Imported $104.95 + $47.50 shipping times 1.12)
The f1.4 will cost you $372.00. (f1.4 imported $284.95 + $47.50 times 1.12)

I have the f1.4 and I like it a lot. People say it's soft. I really only ever use it in low light, but I love it for that.

I have the F1.4 and it's my favorite lens. Well built and feels much more solid than than the 1.8 counterpart.

I agree with neophtye. The review at PhotoZone says it's soft on the edges at f/1.4. What's better, a little soft on the edges, or tons of noise from really high ISO. Or, get noise ninja and take pictures in the dark.
I like the 1.4.
Edit for link.

you must be looking at the 85 1.4 instead of the 50... theres no way the 50 1.4 costs 1100 dollars, thats just absurd! |

Hey Steven:
check out vistek.ca and have a look. Not sure if they ship to your neck of the woods but if they do the 50mm 1.4D is 369.95 and the 50mm 1.8D is 159.95 making them slightly cheaper then in the US but with the conversion it might be worth it. I have the 1.8 and like it alot, but that was a monitary choice because when I bought mine the 1.4 was around 795.00 and hard to justify to myself. Hope this helps.
Sorry I don't know how to post links but I'm sure you can type it in.
All the best

$1100 for a 1.4? Sounds more like the 50mm 1.2L
I have the 50mm 1.4 and love it. Well built and a bit heavier than the 1.8.

Where did you see the 1.4 for $1100? |

Much cheaper in the US. I'd get it there. We (Canada) still have to adjust our prices to reflect our strong $ and sadly our bussiness are reluctent to do so, so even I would get it from B&H. |

If you are willing to wait until they have it in stock you could get the import version for $35 US less. They are the same except you don't get a US 5 year warrentee which is no good to you anyway.
Import version
Just click on the Notify me when in stock and give them your e-mail. As soonas they notify you be ready to order right away. It has worked for me well. |

Ok so now I know I can get the
1.8 NOW for $229 (no risk easy to take back etc at my local)
or
1.4 for $362 (wait for a week and from an international seller, not something I take lightly)
what would you do?
good idea jbsmithana but I must admit I hate to wait when Ive decided on something

I hear you. In that case go with the 1.8 and buy local. Build quality seems cheezy but it takes great shots and seems to hold up just fine. Unless you plan on doing quite a bit of work with it I think it will serve you well.

The 1.8 is a great lense but if you can wait and supress your lighter side you will have an even better lense.
Me I'd wait it will be worth it.
