Just thought I'd ask the New England folks about the state of the fall foliage at the moment. I'm planning a bit of a whirlwind New England tour (heading to CT, then RI, MA, NH, ME and VT) this coming weekend. Just thought it would be good to get some first-hand reports from those areas.

I'm looking at this map, but I don't trust it entirely since it's saying that Western PA is at "peak," and I would say we're well before peak, at least where I am. We still have an awful lot of green in my area, west of Pittsburgh.

Boston here - Mostly still green, although it's certainly starting. Get the odd splash of colour on a few trees and some have that yellow going.

I just drove from Boston to Burlington amd back - Vermont was absolutley beautiful, New Hampshire not quite peak and Boston way behind. Keep in mind that a heavy rain or wind can blow away all those peak leaves overnigth so sometimes the perfect color is short lived.

I just got back from Vermont and I thought it was absolutely gorgeous. But my cousin looked at some of my pictures and said that it was a shame that the colors weren't out yet. :-) That heat wave pushed everything back, so you timed your trip really well. The mountain areas were very colorful, but the lowlands were still green last week. You should have plenty of opportunity for great autumn colors. Have a great trip, Alan!

We're still a week or two away from peak in Western CT.

Thanks for the input... sounds like the timing should be pretty good, then! Except for the fact they're calling for storms on Friday and Saturday...

This is what it looks like in Letchworth Park NY at this moment.... I hoped to get more color by now, kind of disappointed...

This map gives a much closer idea of the foliage report...comparing it to what it is around here in upstate NY

I can tell you that northern NH is probably past peek. I was in the Crawford Notch area on October 6 & 7 and although the colors were bright it was spotty. In some areas the colors had just begun to change. In others very bright and saturated.

In the Franconia area (a little south) on October 13th the colors were about the same as they had been in Crawford Notch the week before.

But then in southern NH where I live (just outside Manchester) the colors have been great for about a week.

I would say anywhere in the Lakes region and possibly south to Concord should be good. I am heading toward the coast over the next day or so and I will update.

Arethusa Falls - October 6

Candia, NH - October 11

Mount Lafayette, Franconia Notch - October 13

North of Franconia Notch it is definately past peak. The best time was last week. I haven't been south of the notch in months, so I can't help you there.

Good hunting.

I just got back from the lakes region of New Hampshire. Still pretty green with a bit of yellow but no real red. The locals said its really late this year.
