Learn to Critique
A short article from Usefilm.com. Here is a snipet from the article that I think sums it up real well.
"Seeing" is a skill we need to developâ€Â¦that we continuously develop. The best professional photographers in the world buy photography books all the time. It is surely not done so they can write letters to the author and comment on their work. They do so because they are continuously honing their skill of observation.

Point of Focus (POF)... very useful bit of terminology I've not come across before.
Thanks for the link, I absolutely agree. |

Good pointer here, scab-lab.
Point of focus, the way I see it, also relates the energy of a piece, in that it can reveal tension, a critical element of energy.
[I am thinking of your entry here //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=34646 with 3 POFs: the hurried gait, facial expression and clock.]

One thing I'm realizing is that my eye is sometimes artificially drawn to part of the picture as I watch it load. I've decided to try to let pictures load fully before looking at them. I also look down at my keyboard and then look up at the fully loaded picture several times to see where my eye goes.

That is an excellent idea. That way you get the vision of the whole right from the start. I think I will put this to practice when evaluating submissions on later challenges.
