i got a 2nd flash head this week ( 430ex )- need a 3rd ;}
i messed around a bit last night with some off camera lighting. nothing spectacular, but curious the opinions on the effect here. i know the right side is a bit dark, but i sort of think it works.
430ex, and 550ex off camera. 550ex ( 1/16 - 105mm) as BG light, 430ex ( 1/4 - 24mm ) as main light. no diffusers here.
i thought it was pretty cool to be able to shoot at f:14 inside at night, and not worry about the ambient light at all.
canon 17-40 f:4 L @ ISO 200 - 1/200th - f:14
....
thanks !
EDIT: and this is just the 430ex - same camera settings. flash at 1/64 i think. just seeing how the flash can stop motion even at 1/200th...

@ david. one thing to mention. in a related thread you mentioned eTTL doing the work for you with off camera flashes. what do you find as the benefit to eTTL over manually setting the flashes?
this is the benefit i think i like with using the manual flash settings:
< snip from an email i sent my mom >
to get the exposure i want i can:
- adjust aperture only to control the flash ( no effect on ambient light )
- adjust shutter speed only to control ambient light ( no effect on flash effect )
- adjust shutter and aperture in opposite directions to balance ambient and flash effects.
- adjust flash power/distance ( no effect on ambient )
- adjust ISO ( effects both flash and ambient ) not something i would recommend.. i'd rather find the ISO needed for a given situation, leave it set, and go from there
