.... well now that I have your attention.....
Doing a glam session this evening and my model wants to be posed with her violin. I have a couple of ideas, but wondered if you guys could share some of yours. I don't want the run-of-the-mill shots I've seen done, but know this model won't go for over the top funky either. Thoughts??
Why couldn't she play cello? lol

I seem to remember more than one shot with a violin including some floating notes and I think one sitting under a tree ... I liked both the aspects of the magical notes and the nature angle ... |

Unfortunately, my session is after dark this evening, so we're stuck in the studio. :/
I do like the idea of floating notes though.

does she actually want nudes, or are you just teasing us again? LOL
does she want energetic, fun, somber, melodramatic, sexy, boudoir? (sorry - I haven't had enough 'Dew this morning)
One thought does occur to me: Use flour / corn starch on the bow & have her playing FIERCELY, with her hair flying about. Use one hair-back light JUST for her hair & the flour. I bet you will make it sizzle & POP all @ once Cindi!
Ok, my brain is SLOWLY starting up now... tell me what you think?

Nothing on top, except a black tuxedo jacket opened up to as daring as she wants to be. Maybe a red carnation or red handkerchief in the lapel pocket. Try several lighting-moods.
Sitting in a chair with the music score/stand covering all from her belly button down. Try different "Angles", like from a high stepladder. Then submit it for Tuesday's Angles Challenge.
She can be topless having the music score/stand covering some spots. The music sheet can be printed, extra large on translucent, almost transparent, paper, with a darkborder making it look like a music book. This idea is similar to your hiding behind a newspaper photo.

Some great thought-starters, Justin! Thanks!
Billy, yes she does want full nude. I do like the idea of the "dust" flying off the strings while she plays....but don't know if you can put stuff on those strings since they're supposed to stay sticky, aren't they??

Just tell her to put TONS of rosin on. That will give the same effect and rosin is perfectly fine for the strings. |

Have her over rosin the bow to get the same effect as the flour - the rosin is the resin used to provide the friction for the strings. When the violist really rips into the instrument, you can make the dust start to fly!

curves of a violin, curves of a woman...
have her lay down on her side facing the camera, place the bottom of the violin in the curve of her waist, kick her top leg forward slightly, have her holding sheet music in front of her with her top arm and have her looking at you over the top with her bottom arm supporting her head, have the bow one end on the ground and the other end in the nook of her leg where it meets her hip...
Find a large matboard or sheet of paper, cut out a couple of music notes, put it in front of a spot, and aim it at the bg :)
Just an idea that came up when I read the description :) LOL
Either way, post some of them when you are done!! Should be interesting!! :) |

Thanks, guys. More great ideas. I'm going to spend some time early this afternoon setting the studio & collecting props so these ideas are just what I need.
Assuming they're not challenge-bound, I will post some shots this evening or tomorrow (depending on how late we shoot & how much editing is needed). Did I mention my nude is almost 50?? Should be interesting! :)

Play with the perspective and the violin can become Cello size :- )
Depends if she wants to actaully play it - or just have it in the shot.
Have it on it's side close up in the foreground and her mimicking it's shape further back ? |

A long time ago I saw a t-shirt with a drawing of a violin, a saxophone, and a television set. It read, "Violin & sax on TV". You could try something like that :) |

michael grecco did a great picture with a nude and a violin. not available on his website unfortunately but saw it in his latest book.
Basically the nude is sitting on the floor. The picture is taken from behind. You essentially see the back. The violin is straigth up in front of the back, almost matching the curves of the back.
not sure this is crystal clear, but the picture is very nice. |

I've seen several renditions of the image you describe, including one this morning when I was searching for ideas. I may try my own version of it anyway....
Ursula, love the Sax & Violins idea :D

Thanks again for the ideas, guys. I shot about 450 shots in a 2 hour session. I'll be sorting and processing for some time. Here are a few teasers......
Thoughts?
(pssst... she's almost 50!!) :)

I must admit violins are considerably sexier and less cliche than guitars :-)

Did she ask that you take shots of the violin with the finger tapes on it? The tape is the violin equivalent of training wheels. Just curious. Those teachers who buy into the tape thing usually use black tape so the student can see it but they don't show up as glaring white stripes like these. |

Hey, no she didn't ask for the tape to remain on, and honestly I didn't catch it 'cause I don't know much about stringed instruments. I agree that the tape is really distracting though. Final versions may have that cloned out (certainly any she wants to order large).

this came to mind because of the passion. I remember it because because I love Irish music.
Maybe you can be inspired by this.
Search River dance for some cool Fiddling. I have a couple fav's |
