This was the post. How many is too many ?
This describes my lens choice since January, too Similarly, the exercise of picking one prime lens and shooting with it exclusively until you've forgotten what other lenses feel like is a learning experience that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. Don't think so? Ask any photographer who's done it.

Hmmm... an interesting exercise, but which lens should I pick? 28, 50 or 85? All are f1.8. Maybe something wider...
Thanks for sharing that. |

I did that back BC (before cards) and I did learn how to "see" the frame for each focal length without even bringing the camera up to eye level. Zooms were rare not too great, and expensive when I was learning to use an SLR film camera.
For the one lens experiment, I would pick a lens about 30 or 35MM focal length for a 1.6 crop camera or 35 to 50mm for a full frame. There is good reason why that angle of view was the popular OEM lens from the beginning of SLR history.

Pack em all and the tripod. Just take lots of photos w/ your wife. It's a win win situation and you will have memories as well as photos. |

Incidentally, I use my zoom lens like this when doing free time creative shooting. I rotate it to 24mm (approx 38mm FF equiv) and leave it there, moving my position for framing. I like it. |

I have a vague memory of a Gary Winograd shot of American football shot with a 20mm. That's obviously the 'wrong' focal length to use. Yet it stands out in my mind far more than all the 200mm and 400mm or longer football shots I've seen. |
Garry Winogrand shoots football. |
Good place to shoot it too. That's the picture I was thinking about. Thanks for finding it, I haven't seen it for about 5 years I think. |
Thanks for bringing this to my attention, love it. On the other hand, if you run into a bear in the wilds of Yosemite, I would recommend the telephoto, not the wide angle. :) |

I think I'm going to stick with the 85 and the 28 only for the next couple of months. |

"Prevaricated" = "told a lie"... Is that what you meant?

Prevaricated more literally means to 'stray from the truth' or the true path.

You and I are the greatest verbal hair-splitting team in DPC, LOL. "stray from the truth" = "tell a lie" in my book, jejejeâ¢

ETA: actually, wordnet offers this: Prevaricate = "beat around the bush: be deliberately ambiguous or unclear in order to mislead or withhold information "
So I guess you win this round, in the end :-)

why not just the 17-40? When I go out like you are I don't want to take a bunch of stuff & don't want to be switching lenses all the time (sensor dust!!)
Buuutt... I really love my 28 1.8 :0)

True - but in this sense I was meaning I'd moved away from the 'path of truth' of using just one prime - and taken two :)

Hey gordon, I can't quite tell from the pic, are you using a lens hood on that puppy? I looked around and got myself a nice multi-stage rubber lens hood as I find that oblique light really kills contrast at wide apertures on the f/1.4. I can pull it out and have it shade just a part of the lens as desired. I love it to bitses.
I can't imagine that this effect would be any different from 1.6x crop to 1.3x crop as it's a lens thing.
Have fun with it. I get all jittery when I put that 50mm on my camera (it's still pretty new for me). Sweet and a half. |

Taking just the 50mm turned out to be a great idea. I used the 85mm maybe 5 times in the whole trip. Having effectively just one prime certainly changed my view on a lot of the opportunities out there.
I suppose the one shot I 'missed' was of the bear I met on a fairly remote trail. Though I doubt lens choice mattered there - I was just trying not to antagonize it while I backed away. Black bears look mighty big when you come around the corner on a trail and find one 5 yards away...
