I think this is a cricket .. or is it a hopper?

Anyway, I am pleased with this snapshot I took yesterday. Thought you might enjoy it...

Cricket

P.S. How come when I try to embed an image it doesn't work?

Here's your image. You have to imbed the image itself, not the page the image is on.

I don't know if it's a cricket or hopper.

Thanks, Steve. Now, how did you do that? I always try to use the buttons when I post...but that obviously doesn't work.

Hi GeneralE,

I read the tutorial and that is what I did. I clicked on the third button in when I am posting, embedded the link http information (see below), and yet it doesn't work. I must be overlooking something really obvious here...

Testing. I think I see the obvious now... I put the link...but didn't detail the .jpeg info -- dah!

Thanks!
Renee

Now, any comments? I'd love a critique. Does this look dark on your screens? This LCD is hard to read...

I was expecting a debate on if cricket was a sport or just boring.

Too much debating about the flag and free speach for you today, Gordon? Were you thinking there would be more here LOL?

Cricket is a lovely sport -- damn -- I could have submitted him LOL...

I don't think it would be productive or appropriate to post my views on flags, US foreign politics or freedom of speech. I wonder how well a cricket would do in the sports challenge though....

Maybe I'll photograph another Feathered Rat and call it "Inspiration For Badminton."

You captured it well - depth of field is good, focus seems sharp, and the background doesn't intrude much at all. The only comment I'd make is that the shot is underexposed - you can see this because the white background has come out grey. Your camera meter will default to making generally white scenes grey, but you can adjust for that using exposure compensation. In this case something like a +1 EV setting would have brightened things up considerably - its worth playing with a bit to see how it works. Try +1 or +2 for mostly white/ light subjects and -1 or -2 for mostly dark/ black subjects

Thanks, Gordon. What is interesting is that the cricket is actually on a sandtone door -- coffee ice cream color... You can't quite tell that from the shot though...

Thanks for the tips. I love learning everything I can. I also got that Kodak book you suggested and your hints about lighting really opened my eyes. I see things so much differently now. The *light* really came on! Thanks heaps...

Now, I'd am going to look for a book that goes into detail about shooting with apeture priority, shutter priorty, etc. I want to really experiment around! It is so much fun...

"understanding exposure' by Bryan Peterson is pretty good if you need something like that. I think it was pretty cheap too.

Before I moved to Japan, I used to believe that cricket was the most boring sport of all. Then I went to a baseball match.

Throw, miss, throw, miss, throw, miss, throw, watch a guy who might run, miss, throw, miss, throw, miss, throw, miss, oh a hit, oh dear doesn't count, throw, miss.......... ad infinitum

Wow. I've always wondered why Jiminy Cricket wasn't black. This is a grasshopper, methinks. I've never heard of a green cricket except for Jiminy. Must have been a racial thing with Disney in 1940...

I'd agree. I went to a baseball match last year. I thought a seventh inning stretch was just a period of time in the game. I didn't realise it was when everyone in the crowd got woken up and stretched.

True, it's just not long enough to be effective. A true hour or two tea break like in cricket would for sure be popular with the concessionaires if not the players. In fact, a shot of a tea set titled "Between Innings" would draw some fours for sure ....

It might even hit some sixes...

Darn! Maybe I meant petit-fours. A plate of them. With a grasshopper on top ....
