except Tori's version of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit" wasn't played for laughs like this is. |

I'm not sure I see it as her mocking the values of the hip hop culture since she has both videos posted on her own website. I think she was just having a bit of fun. |

The thing that gives me pause though is that Alanis is much about "girl power". Why in the world, outside mocking, would she do a video of a song talking about her "love humps"? The song itself is quite derogatory to women in its objectification and I wouldn't think Alanis would be into that...
Could be totally wrong though and she did it on a lark.

I guess it's only derogatory depending on from whose point of view you see it. Obviously Fergie didn't find it objectifying. Being a woman myself, I just found it inane. Kitschy, yes. Campy, yes. Substantive, no. But, than again, the Black Eyed Peas don't sing protest songs. Their sole mission is to get people to dance, have fun and buy their music. I think they succeeded with that song.
I don't think it weakens Alanis' "girl power" stance to show some humor. She can't fly the militant flag all the time...lol.
Sometimes those "classic" lyrics really are true. Girls just want to have fun! :-) |
