I was out in the Botanic Gardens in Helsinki yesterday and spotted a few very serious photographers shooting there.
Honestly, I have never seen a lens quite like this before, and was wondering what it was. Is the 600mm prime? Or, something even longer. The photo doesn't really do it justice!

It's either a 600mm F4 or a 400mm F2.8. The camo effect was added after market.
Watch any major sporting event, you'll see several of them.

I'd bet it's the 500mm F4. Out in public the 500mm is a more common sight than the 600mm. I've met tons of people with 500mm, I've yet to see one with a 600mm. I've only ever met one guy with a 400mm 2.8 and it was the DO

The extended barrel between the wide grip ring and the lens control panel marks this as the 500mm f/4L IS. That gap is not there on either the 400 f/2.8 or the 600 f/4...

I didn't want to disturb them, they were clearly waiting for a bird or something that was in the trees. But you are right, it would have been easier!

I cant believe that no one noticed whats attached to it. It appears to be attached to a 1DMKIII. And I agree it looks like a 400MM F2.8
MattO
ETA just think with the tripod and lens mount, lens, and camera how much money is standing there waiting on a bird.

I did notice the camera. And the thought did cross my mind about how much was invested in the shot. I didn't think the birds around Helsinki were that unusual! |

OK, I find the following quite funny.
I have more than 100 views for this picture of the lens and about the same number of views on my free study entry, which has been in voting for a week!
Perhaps I should have entered the lens shot (even if it is rather poor technically!) in the searching challenge. |
