I had a pretty devastating loss two days ago: my workhorse lens, 18-200mm Nikkor slipped from my hand while I was changing it, and it landed about 20 feet below on a stony street surface :(((. You can imagine what is left of it - basically a tabletop memorial to my stupidity. So my question is, is there any point of talking to Nikon about fixing it (I am pretty sure it cannot be fixed, it can only be replaced), or I should just bite the bullet and order another one? The lens is under manufacturer's warranty, but I didn't have it insured...

I have no advice, but I wanted to convey my sympathies. :-[
PS: Did you pay for it using a credit card with buyer protection? I don't know how long that coverage lasts, but if you have all the receipts, etc., you may get some money back.

if you own a house it might be covered under your homeowner's insurance. i would check with your agent.
sorry 'bout your luck. :(

Do you have home owners insurance? It might be covered on your regular homeowners insurance. Dropping was covered on my lens while drowning was not!
I really doubt it can be fixed and the 'assessment' cost is at least 50-100 bucks - I think it would be better spent on a new one... |

thank you for good advice, guys! I do have a homeowners insurance, so I'll look into that possibility, however I am afraid that their deductible may be higher or comparable with the cost of the lens. Also, I wonder if such a claim would affect the premiums in the future?

Ouch! I did something similar to that with a 70/210 about 10 years ago. I left the top of my bag open, and it rolled out and over the edge. You are spoiled now by the 18/200, so there is no way you will ever be happy without another one like it. On the up side, this may be the excuse you need to upgrade to the VR model.
At least you didn't fall off the with the lens, and the D200 was not on it.
Square Trade Warranties (squaretrade.com) offers accidental damage protection now for new items purchased outside eBay. You may want to look into something similar to that when you get the new one.

Like I've never done that
I broke Bob’s neck ;(
From experience I know that Nikon has a cut off from what they will fix and what they will replace, and my 70-200 was close. I think they did a good job with the repair but another $100 or so and I would have purchased a new lens. Call them and explain what happened and what the damage is and they will give you an good idea or the repair.

thanks! did you actually use this insurance? i could not figure out from a quick look at their website how much it would cost to include the accidental damage protection in their plan, have to dig deeper into that....
indeed I need to look at the bright side of things (following the lens down would be somewhat worse), however it is kind of hard to do :). And it was a VR model... (I think they all are VR, aren't they?).
I was thinking that maybe i should use this as an opportunity to upgrade to something like 70-200 f2.8 VR but I just cannot bring myself to the necessity to carry all this weight around all the time and having to swap it with something wider all the time (apparently I am not good at swapping :))... So i guess I'll stick with 18-200 VR for now...
