I shot a wedding for a friend this weekend. I'm quite overwhelmed by the number of shots I came away with. I think a large number are pretty good quality. Here are just a few, doing B&W so far. Have a bazillion to go.
I had a lot of fun, but admit I have to work on my teacher-voice to round people up. I have a feeling my preference is taking candids over posed shots.
I'm curiuos to know what other people think, as I haven't had any feedback. Am I on the right track, or should I run & hide?
Hehe, the Skip Rowland huddle shot, had to include that here. ;-)

No kiddin'. And adults are SO uncooperative! The kids are generally better ... they're used to being told what to do. But adults? They think they know best. You simply *have* to sound like you're in charge or they won't do anything you say.
Plus, at the wedding, often you become the "announcer". Okay ... we're going to cut the cake now, everyone gather around! (well, you might want to be a little more creative in your invitation than that!)

LOOKIN' GREAT!!! No reason to hide. Love the B&W conversions (and I'm one that generally prefers color!). Keep 'em coming! :-)

Thanks! :-)
Info for the kind PM I received...
I shot everything with my new 40D, in various modes. Sometimes Av (f/2.8 to f/5, depending), sometimes using Highlight Priority. Depending on the light, sometimes I used an external flash mounted on-camera with a Gary Fong Lightsphere. For the indoors stuff I used full manual with the flash & lightsphere. I kept it at f/2.8 and varied the ISO between 800 and 1600 as the sun went down outside. I varied the shutterspeed between 250 and 60 depending on how much ambient light I wanted, as there were a lot of nice lights and candles.
Though I brought a bag of lenses, the only lens I used all day was my 24-70 f/2.8L (except for the football huddle, where I used my wide-angle).
Never used my tripod or reflector, just wasn't time to do the set up shots I wanted to do.
The wedding was delayed, as the bride was late, and I got yelled at by the person who rents the property out. I was like, sheesh biotch, don't yell at me just because you stacked your weddings too closely and I'm carrying a bunch of camera gear. Then, for some reason the reception started half an hour early, so there wasn't time to do the fun shots I wanted to do. :-(
I did walk in on a bunch of naked bridesmaids, which was pretty funny, though all I saw was a silhouette. Unfortunately my camera was still in the bag. :-( I got a shot of the bride stuck in her dress, trying to get it on. It was funny at first, then disconcerting, then funny again when it was fixed.
My entire body was sore by the end of the day, and I slept most of the next day.

LOL @ sleeping the whole next day. I realized that I wear myself out taking portraits. At first I thought I was coming down with a cold then I realized all my muscles were sore. It happens every time I do a long shoot. It's more strenuous than I realized.
Congrats on your first wedding. The pics look great. This looks like a success! |

I spent the entire day with the bride, from hair & makeup at 10am until I was almost falling over dead sometime after 11pm. Sore legs, bum, & back (I guess I prefer low angles). Sore right shoulder & arm from the camera.
Surprisingly, my camera battery icon still showed full bars at the end of the night and ~1,000 clicks. I went through two sets of flash batteries, but never had to break out any new camera batteries. I used two Canon batteries in the grip all day.
I'm not sure what to do about all the photos. I've picked out about 200 essential shots, but that still seems like a lot. Beyond that, I have a lot of shots of wedding party with guests they asked me to take. I've picked 70 of my favs out of the 200 essentials. I suppose I'll PP those individually. The balance 130 maybe a batch. The remaining 800 I might just dump up to my SmugMug and let them have at-em as-is. Maybe the 5-day PP on sales.
I'm tired, I just want to take some shots of birds or something, hehe.

I post most of the candids I take that are 'worth anything at all' (i.e. there is a clear subject that is not obscured or out of focus). You never know what they are going to like or who is going to want them. I had pictures of a 2 year old that were purchased two years AFTER the wedding. I shudder to think why (he'd have to have changed a lot in those two years). My only guess is that something happened to him ... he died or something ... for the parents to want such pictures two years later.

I definitely know that feeling! Sometimes I go somewhere with the family and *purposely* leave the camera behind. That's just so ... "not me". My only explanation? I've already taken two thousand pictures this week and one more would just do me in!

You done great Slippy. Really nice work. I did my nephew's wedding a year ago, and only lens I used except a few WA was the Tammy 28-70mm, so we had the same experience.
Since when is the huddle shot Skip's, though? I did a huddle shot myself, even entered it in the Larson challenge. Do I predate Skip? Enquiring minds need to know...

(hmmm, I don't mean that like it sounds :-) , you know what I mean, right?hehehe) Definitely not in the typical vein of 'Slippy style', you know? ;-P I mean, yeah, where's the cowpoop, Man???? :-D
Honestly, that is really nice work, man. I think you may have something else to do when gold is down! |

Firstly, the composition is nice.... but I must be the only one that think the black and white conversion looks flat. In several the whites seem more like a really, really light grey. There's not much tonal depth.
I played with 0462. Setting the blacks and whites in Curves and then bumping the Contrast by 5 made a huge difference in my eyes. Bump it by 10 and the bride starts to glow, but not so much that you lose the stitching detail in the dress.
I think you did well. I just don't like the post processing.

Thanks for taking a hard look like that, I'll re-look at the big files. I wonder if it's because I worked to create the print-sized files as best as possible, without clipping at either black or white ends; as opposed to the web-sized files, where I'm usually more exaggerated in clipping.
New one...

I really like the BW's you've posted. I left comments on all, as well as the color one.
Overall a very, very nice job on the one's I've seen. I hope you'll post a link to them all at some point. |
