My wife has given me the green light to purchase the Canon 40D, new lens, and flash. When I didn̢۪t have the money to purchase this dream camera I wanted it so bad. Now that I do, I can̢۪t seem to click the order button. I visited circuit city a few days ago and held the 40D (nice) while my son was purchasing an HDTV. I told my wife I was going out to the car and wait for them because the camera was so tempting.

I have a Canon 350D in perfect condition with less than 9000 shutter actions. Honestly I don̢۪t think the 40D will make me a better photographer, just a photographer with better equipment. What should I do? I̢۪m thinking about going ahead with a speed flash and maybe a new lens but holding on to my 350D for the moment while waiting to purchase the 40D.

I have so much to learn about photography that the 350D could still teach me. So I question youâ€Â¦do you think I am making the right decision to stick with it and just add a few things like a new lens and flash to continue to practice and learn?

Isn’t it funny how ones mind works? When you have no money you say to yourself you would purchase something if you did. And when you do have the money, it’s hard to purchase. I have been trying to click the order button for days nowâ€Â¦still can’t do it.

I know that feeling too well. Without money, we all have wishlists and daydreams, but when it comes to parting with the money the questions begin to rear up in your head.

In your position, I wish!, I would hold fire for now and stick with the 350D. Buying glass makes sense, it carries over to whatever body you get next. Or just keep the money banked and watch cos the price is sure to drop on the 40D.

Or just go for it, get the 40D and sell the 350D to help finance a new lens. Not helping much am I?

Get the 40D :))

It's often the problem when one's dreams change from being impossible to possible.

I placed an order for the 40D three different times and canceled it two times. I had a hard time doing it as well. It is not cheap! And I kept having major buyers remorse...the last order I placed, I kept wanting to cancel because the remorse was huge!

Needless to say that that when I finally had it in my hands, all the buyers remorse disappeared and I was in love with that bad boy. The 40D outperforms the 350D in every way...I am able to get shots with the 40D that I never could get with the 350D because of the advanced focusing. I am amazed at image quality and have fallen in love with my lenses again...I get better performance out of my lenses with the 40D. The camera rocks!

If your wife gave you the OK and it won't cause friction, I'd just buy it! You will LOVE it. It is far superior to the 350D. And even though my Rebel has about 8000 actuations and is in perfect working order and I could not justify the purchase of the 40D...I went for it and do not regret one little bit.

I recognise that sneaky trick. Sometimes the quickest way to shut me up on a piece of kit is for my wife to helpfully say " well go ahead and buy it . ."

It's unfair I tell you.

If it makes you feel any better I also have a green light to get a 40D and I'm now busy finding reasons to stall. I even set a price point that I thought would be a good stumbling block, and now with the cashback it's dropped below it Aaargh !!

I think it is £50 in UK, $100 in USA??

There are no camera or lens rebates on the Canon USA Promotions page.

Edit to add: Scott - I know how you feel. I just bought my first L lens a few weeks ago. It's dang scary spending that much money on a hobby. Looking back, I wish that I had rented one first, just to really get the feel for it. I may have decided on a different focal range.

I think this is perhaps more important for a body, where you won't get as much in the second hand market. I'm sure you can find some place to rent a body for a week. It may seem like ~$40-60 down the drain, but imagine if it saves you from spending $1200 you could otherwise spend on something else.

I've bought most of my camera gear on impulse. I've never regretted an expensive lens purchase- I strongly believe they have made me a better photographer. I was starting to experience buyer's remorse with the 40D body until I took it on a trip to the Canadian Rockies last week. After viewing the results of that trip I am convinced it has improved my pictures over the 300D. In particular, the low noise levels at higher ISO's make a huge difference. I was shooting a lot of wildlife in overcast or snowy/rainy conditions and got great results at ISO 800 and pretty good results at 1600. Until now, I have always come back from a trip being displeased with most of my photos and only a few "wall worthy" shots. The combination of the 40D and the 100-400MM L IS changed that. Now I have a lot of pictures I am proud of. Too many, even.

You only live once. As long as you don't need the money for food, shelter, tuition, etc. go for it!

Just received my 40D today, and just sold my 30D a couple of hours ago on ebay. Had the same problem, not going to make me a better photographer, but I wanted it really badly, so I gave in to temptation! and you know what, I'm glad that I did! That live view is really going to help my composition!

You know you want it, and you'll end up getting it eventually, so save yourself the heartache and follow the advice of Oscar Wilde; 'in order to overcome temptation, you have to yield to it'!

Good shooting :-)

I've already got the 100-400L and I'm trying to fight the 40D . .

That sort of talk just doesn't help :- )

Not trying to pirate this thread, but I am hoping very much that their will be a rebate on the 5D, as I am seriously being pushed/pulled to upgrade. Noticed that the prices are coming down on them too...hmmm

Just think of me as that little devil on your shoulder. C'mon, drink the kool-aid!

If I were thinking, I'd advise everyone to stick with their old cameras. The more people getting good equipment lessens my chances of ever getting a ribbon.

I've been hanging on to my 300d, I got it when it first came out, I wanted to get a couple of lenses in my modest kit before upgrading and my *secret* desire was to go full frame. I'd have to say that it has been a good, reliable camera but I'm sure the image qualitiy has deteriorated, more noise and artifacts are begining to appear (I'm a pixel peeper).

Now that 40d sure sounds good and I'm wondering whether I should forget the full frame and save myself a few $$$.
I'm juggling the cost of the 40D plus having to add a super wide angle lens against the cost of the 5D and using my 17-35 tamron with it, but I'm not sure that lens is up to the task.

I think the 40d is relatively inexpensive (body only), the 300d (with kit lens) cost me just as much a few years ago, the 40D is also cheap compared to the price of the 30d when it came out. However, when the next generation D5 comes out the price of those older models should drop, right? If I can hold out that long. This post is just thinking out loud really, I'm pretty confused at the moment.

In any case I'm expecting an huge noticeable difference when I make the jump, I hope I'm not disappointed.

My 20D was getting up in frames and we have a huge shoot coming up. I informed her we needed a backup camera and we were looking at a 30D, but the 40D was announced and we waited. I am glad we did. I don't normally shoot macros, but the live view has changed that. Also when in live view if you change the WB (for jpeg) it changes on the live view and you see which of the presets looks best or shifts things to the way you want. The only, and I mean only, nitpick I have with the liveview is manual focus only.

Everything out of the 40D (over the 20D) is better. It almost makes me think I had a bad copy of the 20D.

I want to like the 40D . . really I do . . and I've even held one and fired off some shots with it. I really liked how much quieter the shutter was, how much better the AF was, how much brighter and clearer the screen was (heck I could even read it), but the thing that really struck me was that it felt . . bigger, and I don't really want it any bigger. I deally the same size or a tad lighter/smaller would have been ideal. But hey.

I'm sure I will succumb sooner or later to the lure of the additional bits.

I really would like to see what they do with the 5D, but that is going to cost real money and the 40D is surprisingly cheap (for a brand new camera). Between now and when the cashback ends I've got my birthday and Christmas . .

Scott stay with that XT man. It is a fine camera. Learn and enjoy. Maybe take the extra cash and buy a nice lens if you want. But IMO your camera is fine.
