Settled on the camera- or cameras I should say. I'll be buying my friends D70 which he's hardly used, plus a D80-new.
So between these two lenses
Nikon AF micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8
Nikon AF-2 VR Micro Nikor 105mm h/2.8G IF-ED
A kit lens will be coming with the D70- whatever the kit lens was I can't remember at the moment.
So if choosing only one of the above, which would be the most versatile. I think I know, but I want to make sure I'm on the right path.
and a couple more questions I just thought of-
if it says camera body- does it come with the software for the camera? My Oly came with software.
Also do the lenses come with a lens hood or do I need to order that seperately?

yes, I've noticed many fine pieces of work with that particular lens.
This lens shopping is going to drive me insane. I finally just decided I'll only buy one lens for now and save the rest of whatever money I'll have left for letter.
I have a list of 6 lol, but these were the two that really stuck out to me that I seem to find consistent good work with. Course it's not ALL the lens, but it helps! |

Really depends on what you want to be shooting.. the 105 gives you 150mm on a D70 and D80 the 60mm gives you 90mm
For portraiture I would suggest the 60mm, I have it and it's great. for real deep serious macro either will do but the 105 and VR will help get you right into the action. |

will the 105 work for portraits and macro? I need a portrait lens but for now want something I can use for both but leaning towards portraits.

He, he, I know which one I'd get, and it wouldn't be the same one as Pedro and Manny :)
Really, though, it totally depends on what you want to do. |

| The 105mm with the 1.5 crop on the D70 could be a real issue for you. I have a 105mm MF and love it, but it seems too long a lens for most portrait situations. |

| I'd be using the 105 on the D80 mostly. The D70 is going to be my backup. The D80 will be my primary that I use for everything. |

I love my Sigma 105mm for outdoor portraits, but inside it does get a little long. But the macro, oooooh, the macro..
Anyways, probly best to get the 60 for portraits. |

anyone know what the kit lens was that was sold with the D70? I've emailed my friend but haven't heard back from him.

i would say to go for the 60mm, it is a way more versatile
focal length on the 1.5x crop bodies

Go with the 105mm macro... it will keep you a bit farther away from bugs and stinging insects as you are shooting.
Use the kit lens for the portraits, it is perfect for that. The focal range is just right, and a portrait lens does not need to be the sharpest one in your kit anyways. |

yep - that is the kit lens that came with my D70 when I bought it ~2 years ago. A decent beginners lens, but not real sharp and not real fast.

Sorry, yes it is. It is a very good lens. I also have the 60mm and I like it and echo all that has been said in this thread. To answer your hood question, they do come with hoods, unlike Canon... :-P
ETA: I don't think a hood came with my 60 though.

| I agree with several others, for versatility and portraits, the 60mm. The 105 VR? Serious macro. |
