This past week has seen me celebrate my one year anniversary of entering challenges here.
I came upon this site at the direction of a person I met at a photography course - I wish I could find him to THANK him for this blessing.
Because of this place I have become the photographer I always wanted to be.
A photographer who knows stuff and can handle her camera, but has a lot of learning to do and a wonderful place to do it.
At the start of this year I decided to take the 'learning' of photography seriously and chose to 'study' photography diligently using the tools I could access on the web and through books.
I have painstakingly searched this site for all the answers I needed. The wealth of knowledge that lies in these forums and tutorials is astonishing.
The MOST AMAZING thing I've found is just how GENEROUS & FRIENDLY people have been when it comes to sharing what they know. (I'm thinking of you jdannels, who shared his tip of using selective colours when doing B&W conversions, and Judi with her amazing infared tutorial, and I couldn't have even entered my first challenge without the tute by EddyG on preparing my image for challenges. There are SO MANY MORE who have freely given what they know - I could list for hours!)
One year ago I entered this image
and got a score of 4.8
One year later exactly I entered this image (which was scary because it was a mimic of goodman who is not just a great photographer, but a very lovely lady!)
got a score of 7.2, 5th place and an honorable metion
Isn't it amazing what can happen in a year?
I could NEVER have achieved this without this community - I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all the members I've come across, to everyone who has generously shared their knowledge - those who selflessly write and produce tutorials, answer questions and SO FREELY share what they know.
I am so, so SO grateful for everyone who 'gives' at this place. The SC are amazing, so quick with answers and friendly to boot.
I want to THANK everyone who has left a comment, sent me a PM and generally made me feel as though I 'belong'.
I am SO PROUD to be a member here - I know my real world friends can't and don't appreciate my devotion to this site, Thank God my family understand.
So for EVERYONE who has been SO KIND - I Thank You and I hope to return the favour as and when I can.
Oh - and I want to SINCERELY THANK my team members - it was a big decision for me to join a team - I didn't think I could do it, but I have to say that along with the monthly side challenges have seen me have my biggest growth spurts - Harajuku Girls ROCK!
Again to EVERYONE who's reached out to me - your thoughts and words mean SO VERY MUCH.
Gratefully,
Lisa |

Lisa, there are so many people in this world who have a passion, a desire. And the majority of those people never get the chance to realise it. Not entirely through their own doing...but through their own necessity to survive. That is how many dreams get put on hold...and stay there.
You came to this place...with a dream. And you found many people here with the same dream. They too learnt how to bring out that dream within them by the help of others. And in return...they have helped others realise their passion. And you are one of them.
I truly thankyou for your acknowledgement of my tutorial. I am so pleased it has helped you.
Now please...in return...help another to realise their dream.

Congrats Lisa!
It's threads like these that keep me hanging around here. Let's not forget than among all the whining and bickering threads there are people (a majority I'd say) who appreciate this site and are learning and progressing at their own pace.

Glad to have you here, keep shooting and learning.
One whole year and we still don't know what you look like or what part of the world you exist in. Of course on my street we meet our neighbors once every 20 years. |

Thanks SO MUCH guys for you lovely words (except crayon - GRIN!)
Didn't realise that I hadn't noted where I live. I'm a Melbourne, Australia girl - SMILE!
As for the profile picture - well the one person I don't take photos of is Me - GRIN! I'll have to think of something else to pop in there - SMILE!
And Judi - I certainly will assist others in their learning - I have a friend about to dip their toes in the world of photography and can't wait for her to 'feel' the love - SMILE! |

Likewise girl, like I said yesterday..
Thank you too, for you being a friend (even though we live at the other side of the world, haha!), for you being my team-mate, for you being YOU!
I hope we'll keep in touch, even though I'm busy and stuff.. well.. you know.
LOVE! |

Wow, that is awsome, it is fun to look back and see where we started versus our more recent entries (yours more than mine...). It proves this really is a learning site thanks to all the people that share and are willing to help others. |

Thanks Lisa for the little nod in your thread. :)
I have always had an eye on what your up to. I think during the 30 day Where you live challenge a while back I saw you really take off. I am very excited you did so well with your Deja Vu entry. You'll have a ribbon in no time. :) |

Australia? Geesh, I guess that some day I will have to go there - so many cool folks here live there. And here I was hoping you lived somewhere in the states so I could meet you.... Your work caught my eye early on - it's been a delight watching you "grow" here. Keep it up! |

In an interesting footnote to my anniversary celebration...
This morning I got up before dawn and headed into Melbourne to the MCG, the site of the biggest football grandfinal in our state today.
I thought I'd wander about with my camera - I did and had an absolute BLAST!
As I was leaving I felt a tap on my shoulder, at first I was sure it would be security - there was HUGE crowd and I had cheekily positioned myself with the TV crews and press photographers - SMILE - I thought the gig was up but NO even better!
It was that WONDERFUL man that I reference at the beginning of this post - the man who directed me here in the first place, the man I credit with changing the course of me as a photographer - GRIN!
I think I may have shocked him with my outburst 'You changed my life! ' GRIN!'
I was just SO HAPPY to see him and THANK HIM for directing me to DPChallenge.
I hope he wanders along to 'find' himself here too - and if you do Phillip (see now I know his name - GRIN!) THANK YOU!
Oh and as another aside - my scores this week are less than stella - GRIN!
