You know what? I'd actually pay for that. I'll look into it. I figure it won't be cheap but it would be one cool conversation piece.

Thanks for the link.

i wonder if they would accept a quark file or some other layout of the photos instead of just photo files themselves. ??

interesting...would love to get some more information. $30 is not bad...

If anyone does get a book can they post how much they liked it? Maybe even a few photos of what the book looked like? etc...

They say:

All photo/images require a .jpg extension. The uploader may accept images without this extension but they will not show up in your library of images.

What you do is you load your images into your account then you arrange them the way you want the book to look and create the book. All on-line.

Also they note:

In general, for Digital Cameras the recommended minimum image resolution is 600 x 800 (pixels). The standard image resolution is 1200 x 1600 for the best results on myPublisher.com.

PC Users:

1. Before you can make a book you need to upload your photos, so click on the "Upload Photos". To begin uploading your photos from your CD-ROM or Hard Drive to myPublisher.com, doubleclick on your CD-ROM/ Hard Drive Folder that is visible in the uploader Directory Tree.

2. Doubleclick on the "Pictures" Folder that is a sub-folder under the CD-ROM/ Hard Drive Folder. Your Photo CD or Hard Drive pictures will appear in the top Preview pane.

3. Click on the desired photos and drag them to the Upload pane at the bottom. Be sure to upload pictures from the "Pictures" folder on the Photo CD/Hard Drive.

4. When finished, click "Upload Now". If you get a message asking if you want to install and run the Pixami tool, click "Yes". This helps upload your pictures quickly and easily. Depending on what software you are running you may not be asked this question, and may continue with step 5.

5. Once the upload is complete, click "Done" to view your photos. These are the photos that will appear in your book.

6. Next follow the instructions on making a book online at myPublisher.com by clicking on "Create Book".

Mac Users:

4. Select the desired photo you wish to upload and click on the "Open" button. Be sure to upload photos from the "Pictures" folder on the Photo CD or Hard Drive.

5. When finished selecting 1 to 4 photo images, click "Upload Now". Wait until all the data has been uploaded successfully. Next, click the "Go Back to Your Contact Sheet" link. To add more photos, return to "Upload Photos" and repeat steps 1-5.

Something I played with (based on an article in Lenswork) was pdf publishing. It was pretty straight forward to do, using tools like
powerpoint or word to put together a collection, then using free adobe pdf creation tools to 'publish' into a pdf format. It isn't as tangible as a coffee table book, but a whole lot more 'book like' than a web site of images.

One other advantage with publishing in PDF is that you can embed links in the document, either to other files on the computer/CD or on the internet (will work if the computer on-line). This lets you have a small, self-contained document with links to hi-res images, movies, sound files, or websites. The "full" version of Acrobat also allows you to create fill-in forms (e.g. an order form). This is an excellent way to create a portfolio or catalog of your works for sale. I've worked with Acrobat a lot (since v. 2.0) so feel free to email me with questions.

I'm cheap at heart, so I used pdf995 which is a freebie pdf creator. It seemed much more like a 'publishing' approach putting together the content for a pdf release than just sticking it on a web site. Its something I want to do more with, if I ever get pictures worth publishing like that.

The books they show on Tech-TV looked great!
Well bound and etc. They said the employees were very polite and etc.
You can even order them in leather!

I may order some for gifts this year.

mac users also have an option in iphoto to 'order book' similar prices, and you get to pick some designs and add some text.

Thanks to those who mentioned making the book with iPhoto. Since I have photoshop, I hadn't checked this program out yet. It's a whole lot easier to work with than the other site. Both good deals, though!

Are macs psychic? When I added an introduction page, it automatically entered "These photographs were taken by Katherine Gregory in June and July of 2003." Haha, I'm guessing it read the info from the files?

Well, I don't have any official proof mac are psychic, but as a devoted user for several years I am pretty sure that they are. Truly a wonderful and simple machine to use. Glad the iphoto book info helped. Let us know how you like your finished copy : ).
