So is using say... Gaussian Blur and stuff like that legal in this challenge? |

Looking at the top entries in the Impressionism II challenge, I'm expecting that it will not only be legal but expected... Sigh.

Beware the use of the Soft Focus filter preset in Picasa; it selectively edits pixels and will result in a DQ.

Go have some fun with your camera rather than with PS for this one. Try things like old stockings, gauze or vaseline on a filter to achieve the soft focus. |

With basic editing, you are going to need to rely on your camera for most of your "softness." Sure, gaussian is allowed, but unless it's used artfully, the impact of the image might lose something if done tack sharp and then expecting that filter to make it look soft.
GOOD LUCK. |

As the weather is turning here in the Northeast US, I find fog & mist *very* helpful!!!!

Just Gaussian blur and fade, repeat as needed. Best to over-sharpen a bit before blurring. Also, best done at web size.

BTW adding fine monochromatic Gaussian noise and fading works too.
Then there is:
nylons/panty hose
Vaseline
cheese wrappers
your breath
real fog/mist
soft focus/glamour filters
condoms

Can't think of anything that goes more appropriately with condoms :-)

I was thinking the same thing, then remembered I have to go to Houston Sunday and Monday - which would otherwise be prime shooting days. Oh well. |

When you happen to be stuck in the Middle East and nary a pair of panty hose is to be found, it's kind of interesting what you can find that will work instead. Like very very very cheap shower caps. :-) |

Heh. Very true, but they never happen when you need 'em. :-) |

Plus they may sandblast your equipment.

I thought desert warriors used panty hose to screen their rifle muzzles against sand? Seriously...

Panty hose would not be much of a barrier to sand, especially the powdery stuff in the middle east.
There are plastic muzzle caps for just such a purpose. They cost about a nickel and they do not need to be removed before firing (though doing so is recommended). Sand in a rifle barrel is bad news indeed, it can cause the rifle to explode in a very unpleasant way. |
