I am considering upgrading from my HP Photosmart 612, and would like some recomendations from people here, I feel that my ability is limited with the 612 as far as features and zoom ability. Does anyone have any good recommendations that would be a step up and get the most options for my money. I would greatly appreciate any input you might have. |

That's prolly the most important question... after you've decided on a price limit, next you need to determine which features are really important to you. Ask yourself what aspect(s) of your current camera do you feel limit you the most, and you will get a good idea of what additional features you need to grow.
If you post a price range and a short list of important features, you'll get a ton of recommendations.
Also, it would be useful for you to define what form factor is important to you; are you looking to stay with a compact camera, or is the size not a concern? The answer to this question has a major impact on which cameras you should consider.
Finally, I strongly urge you to spend some time on //www.dpreview.com. You can get a great idea of the strengths & weaknesses of various cameras by looking through the reviews.

I was thinking around the $400 range or so, I would really like something with a good zoom ability, size doesn't really matter to me. |

First you need to work out how much you want to spend, then also try and understand what kind of photography you want to do. From that you can probably start to figure out what features you care about and then go from there
This is a good link with digital cameras broken down by usage, resolution and cost - it should at least get you going in the right direction.
//www.dpreview.com has lots of detailed info about particular cameras, particularly once you have an idea of what you want to achieve.
Another big thing is to at least try and hold the camera you are thinking of getting in your hands - some feel 'odd' depending on your hand size/ particularly preferences.
I'd probably think you would fall in the 'photo student' category ? Wanting to improve, needing some manual controls that you can grow in to, but wanting a camera that can take good pictures now, without too much fiddling to start with ? This link has the recommendations in that range You generally can't go far wrong with a Canon, Nikon or Sony camera too.

I guess the A70 would be around $400, maybe slightly less. I'm pretty pleased with mine. There's now a full review on //www.dpreview.com, which Gordon has mentioned. |

if you scout ebay you might be able to find something like an S602 for around 400... also the fuji 4900 is a great camera, but it's only 4.3MP... one of those can be had on ebay for around 250.

I'm glad to see the Sony Mavica CD500 on the Student Camera list - great lens, great in auto mode, but fully manual for when you want it. Tons of high-end features - histogram, great low-light focus, etc. Plus, you can blow all your money on the camera without having to save much for the memory - a 10 pack of CDRW's (80mm) is all you'll need for a very long time, and it goes for about 10 bucks. Retail is a little more than $400 (probably 6 or 700), but well worth it. It's the 5MP upgrade from my camera.

Try this experiment...
Browse the galleries and pick out photos that you like and that match the type of photos you intend to take. Then look at the cameras that were used to make those photos. You may be surprised!
I had always liked the lens on the Sony F707/717 series, but didn't take the camera that serious. I was amazed at the work that had been with. |
