Ok... so... how come people say my score is low because .."people don't get it" or ... "it's over their heads" ...

Maybe the voter did understand what they were voting on and still voted it low because it wasn't good? Just because YOU thought it was good doesn't mean it IS good... all you are doing is insulting the person (or numerous people) voting without even knowing who is giving you the vote or what his/her reasons is for giving you the vote (for those that don't leave a comment).

Voting is done by the masses of various levels of skill... if your submission's receive a low vote by most but a high vote by a few... it doesn't mean that only a few 'got it'... just means your submission appeals to a niche market (regardless of whether it is good or not).

I like some of my lower scoring images more than some of my highest. Also, my second highest scoring images probably has more technical issues than any photo in my challenge entries.

DPC voters are as fickle as any other fad-based market. DPC is all about pop art, excepts for the nudes (which are expected to be "fine" art).

Anyway, enjoy your rant thread :-)

These are good points EyeTrap, even well thought out and logical. But to really make it a good rant you now have to leave logic behind and fly off the handle, unnecessarily so. Those are the best rants. Eventually someone will disagree with you and you can rant back and forth for awhile to really let it out. Then someone brings out this, . The rant goes on for a couple more pages and then tis comes out, . about a half a page later, the rant goes off topic and loses steam. :P

FWIW, I agree with you.

Leroy! I knew you had a different style of nude photography but I couldn't ever come up with a description. "Pop-art nude" fits, I think - maybe not perfectly, but somewhat.

EyeTrap: I don't know *exactly* what you're refering to, but I do know that it is possible that voters "don't get" the connection to the challenge (this is a classic example). As for not getting a photo in general, dunno. But I think largely when I see discussion about not getting the photo, it's talking about not understanding how it relates to the challenge.

this is also a classic example for what EyeTrap said; a lot of people (like me, because I don't know much about Dr. Seuss) didn't get it, but it is also a really poor shot (technically). Just my 2¢.

Now pass the popcorn.

Can't help it jdannels... I write code for a living so logic is kinda in my blood lol... but here goes...

Just referring to the sihlouettes scores thread klstover...

There are lots of people threatening to self dq ONLY because their score is not what they were expecting or will bring down their precious average and then they go on to say it's because people don't get their entry or its above the level of voters.

Now i have no clue if their photo was one of the lower scoring ones i gave or not but to say that basically implies that i'm stupid if i happened to be one of the ones giving them a low score.

They don't know who i am, what my background is... maybe i have an honors from Harvard majoring in Art (not like that would make a diff to determining if my vote is good or not)... It also reeks of being childish in that you are basically saying you aren't going to play unless you can win.

I haven't entered many challenges but have viewed EVERY single one and i have been aroudn since a few months after this site started up... i'm working on entering more and i am starting to vote...

I like my lowest scoring challenge... yes things could have been done diff/better and maybe to most it sucks but to me it doesn't and i stepped out of my normal shooting to do it... (think it was in 10 or 15% with a low 4 avg)... even if it was on its way to a brown i would not have considered removing it... and i didn't blame the voters for voting it low because they didn't 'get it' and i did :P

Right, I get it now - thanks for the explanation.
I'm inclined to agree with you.

No no no. You really have to work up to a good rant (unless you're a 5 year old Hungarian boy). This was a good practice rant though. Hang in there, plenty more to rant about each and every week. :)

edit to add: btw, you can't remove your rant. It becomes part of the permanent record. :P

Alternatively, we could just try spicing it up a bit by shoehorning in a discussion on religion, abortion rights, and the war in Iraq?

not only challenge entries but this applies to portfolio images too. I have seen many people here who in forums always saying that I am here to learn, please give me more comments. But all they want is someone saying that their photo is 'great' (and over used and misused word here at dpc).
If you tell them what you actually feel, they will show their anger by not marking your comment helpful. (and yes they say they are here to learn).
People say that photography is art, but same time they forget that an artist should have an open mind. These people just can not adjust to any idea that they think is bad idea. (they claim they are here to learn).
There are many examples, one always come to mind is , Leroy's industrial nude, it got lots of 1s, why. Just because some people think anything nude-is-bad.

I will support your right to abort religion in Iraq if you support my thread highjacking.

Let the permanent record show Art has issues with young Hungarian boys.

A truer statement should probably read --

Let the permanent record show that Art has issues.

Nobody ever gets my shots. I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread, but the DPCer's just won't open their minds enough to see that! Maybe if I keep telling them, it'll finally sink in? :)
