Could anyone tell me what kind of spider this is?
It is about 2 and half inches long.

They're very helpful little critters and SO beautiful. I haven't seen any in a long time, but when I was a kid there was always one in the same spot. I used to sit there for hours just watching it. Beautiful creature.

yeah, my wife detests spiders, they send her screaming, but when we found one of these on our garage and learned more about it, she told me to leave it there. It was around for a week or so and haven't seen one since. :(

I hate them, too, but I find that photography has helped me overcome a lot of the fear. Getting up close to get a shot, and then examining the results later kind of takes some of the scariness away.

Here's one I shot last year.

My boy has a HUGE one he's taking to 'show and tell' today in his class, and then they'll let it go in a garden at his school. My wife is freaking out because it looks so scary, but I reassured her (hopefully) that it's harmless.

my 7 year old daughter just took a live garden spider to school this morning we caught it lastnight in a bush out in front of our house. If it survives the day we are going to put him back by his web after school. I will see if I can get some decent shots of it.

ETA, My grandma used to tell me that Spiders look ugly because they have a job to do and God wanted us to leave them alone. Ofcourse then she would say "God must have a big job in store for you!". I never really liked that woman.

That is the one spider that I don't mind. One, they tend to stay within a few inches all the time. Second, the designs they make are cool. Three, my high school and college colors were yellow and black. hahahah. Oh yea, and four, they remind me of the story "Charlotte's Web."

My grandmother told a story about one that was outside her kitchen window one of the Autumns Eisenhower was elected president. She knew in September or October that he would definitely be elected because she got up one morning and the spider had "written" IKE in the web. She swore it was true! I, however, have never seen an actual word in the web though.
