Hey guys!

I'm in the process of trying to get into a team of photographers covering a fire festival in Edinburgh (Samm'huin). And the first thing they've asked me to shoot is a fundraiser/club night this Friday. So there will be lots of musicians, performers, colourful people in the audience. And I've never shot anything remotely similar before!

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it, and if you had any advice? What kind of styles of shots can you get? How do you get them? What kind of equipment do you use? With what kind of settings?

Any advice would be much appreciated!!!

My preference for shooting low light/ evening/ club photography is high ISO and fast, fast lenses. I use a 50mm 1.4 wide open and shoot at ISO 1600 or ISO 3200, then usually convert to high contrast black and white.

I'd avoid flash as much as possible, as it kills the ambient mood that you would probably be trying to capture. Shoot a lot. Tons. More than you think you need. Maybe a few will be sharp.

I also tend to use the center autofocus point as it works better in low light, or I'll just switch to manual and shoot more, while changing the focus point, again trying to get a few in focus. Putting an AF point over a high contrast part of the scene at the distance you want to focus can help a lot too - there's usually something reflecting light in a bar that you can use as a focus aide, be it a glass or some metal or something similar.

Also, try it out at home first - shoot at night with just a few low room lights on. Get used to focusing and working with your camera in the dark, when you can't see the controls. Practice before you have to do it for real.

Thanks :)

I'll try and steal a 50mm prime off a friend... And yes, I will shoot like mad. (I'm going for a practice to a gig the night before, to see if I can get the hang of it...)
